Captured from her village by a warring tribe, Teinantzen becomes a maid to the queen of the empire who captures her. She, unwisely, falls in love with the king.
When the queen dies in childbirth, Teinantzen is reassigned to the nursery. She becomes the nursemaid to the infant prince the queen bore before dying.
Two years later, the king is trying to remarry. Because of his "son"'s devotion to Teinantzen, who raised the prince, the king chooses Teinantzen as his new bride. Although she is delighted at being married to the man she has had a girlish crush on for years, Teinantzen is worried for her life. The king does not trust her, and made it quite clear that he would have her executed whenever he so desired.
As if her possibly impending death was not enough, two people seem to be incouraging Teinantzen to rule the empire by herself. If the king finds these treasonous letters, she will definately die. Will she live?
