God, I love the freedom of artistic interpretation. This is also another poem written after one of Michelle's pieces. Again, I suggest you check her out!

Now, this poem is indeed connected to my poem: 256.Poetry.A Promise Kept. In writing both of these I connected two of her pieces. This is the first part of the story to "A Promise Kept". In fact, this one was written first and then I stumbled across her piece "Reunited" and they just kind of connected. Anyway. The piece this was written for is called "Defeated" and can be found here: http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/art/m/i/michellehunt/scan0009.jpg.html

Alone she waits
In a place of mourning
Grieving her love
Who left without warning

In a war ravaged land
Where so many were taken
The toll of death
Has all left them shaken

Like a ghost
She sits on his grave
She holds back the tears
And tries to be brave

Not many gifts
Did she ever receive
But he gave her a rose
Before he did leave

It came with a promise
It came with a warning
He gave it to her and said
He would be gone by morning

“Love me forever
And I’ll find a way to return.
This I promise
You will see, you will learn.”

And after being given his sword
She lies on his grave
Waiting for him to fulfill
The promise he gave
