The air smelled of dank silence and mystery in the early hours of the morning. The cold air brushed against me softly and I shivered. My coat was not warm enough and my trip was long. Not to mention dangerous. I could tell my part was vital in our attack of the Lightning gang, but why I was necessary to give them the warning was not clear to me. It confused me. They knew they were in trouble for blowing up our Speak Easy and our brewery. They had to know what was coming for them. Maybe Ricky, the leader of the Rain gang which is the one I belong to, thought they wouldn’t hurt me in fear of them really getting it. I carried a pistol in my garter. I wasn’t stupid. Men these days only cared about the liquor. To kill me wouldn’t mean nothing to these killers. My skirt kept rising up into my coat as I walked, the dammed thing, but I had to look good. For this mission was of stark warning and I had to keep them looking at me. I couldn’t have them looking at the door when the men come in. It was gonna be a quick attack, and we were going to kill them all. I walked into the Speak Easy. I looked at the man watching the door. I whispered “Lightning.”, and he let me in.
The place was dank and dark. Not unusual. The place stank of cigarette smoke and hard booze. Most women were wearing flappers or their normal work clothes, not bothering to change. Men were in their suits wearing hats as they smoked cigars. Just a normal gang-related Speak Easy.
I walked over to the bar and ordered scotch. The bartender asked me who I was. I just smiled and looked over the mousy haired, lanky man. He wasn't much to worry about, except if he had a gun hidden somewhere.
“I’m new here. A friend told me about this place. Hi, my name is Catrina. Just call me Cat if you will.”
“Alright Ms. Cat. That sounds right dandy to me.” he said and went to serve others who were waiting.
I looked at the clock. I had a few moments to enjoy my drink before the Lightning Gang’s leader was expected to walk in. I waited patiently and I drank my scotch. Suddenly the door opened. It was him. John Counter. He was the man I was after. He looked at me and I stared back. He knew who I was.
“Well, hello Ms. Cat. How are you this evening?” he slid his slimy body into the stool next to me.
“You should know. I’m here to tell you its over. We’re coming after you. You destroyed our Club and you’re gonna pay? Do ya understand there, Jack?” I smiled at him lifting my empty glass for the bartender.
“You think I’m gonna let you go, kitten? You ain’t leaving here alive.” He leaned closer to me as he talked.
“Don’t be so sure buddy.” That was when the first bullet rang through the air.
It was a short fight. The Lightning Gang wasn’t prepared for a right away attack. They first shot John Counter then everyone else, but me. I walked out after stepping over the dead bodies of what was left of the Speak Easy. I lit a cigarette and walked off back to my apartment. I had work tomorrow. The Lightning Gang was gone and my gang work was over.
