This is my entry for the unusual creatures contest. I got carried away...I meant it to be loads shorter. :)

If you ever see a caterpillar,
Just lying on a leaf,
You may think that it’s sad,
Struck with insectile grief.

But before you go comforting it,
Listen to what I’ve said,
You really must consider,
The shape of its small head.

If it is round as a ping-pong ball,
Then you can both have fun,
But if you're squeemish and it's flat,
Then I suggest you run.

Now if you go and look closer,
Which I wouldn’t recommend,
You’ll see small orange feelers
Sprouting out of its rear end.

But once you’ve seen those you simply can’t stop,
What you can do is find a longs stick,
Flip it right over,
Oh, I’m sure you’ll say ‘ick!’

For under it’s soft belly,
Between tiny folds of fat,
Reside two little sucker,
Now what do you think of that?

Oh, don’t quit now, you’ve just begun,
Wait ‘till you see it move about!
It exudes a sticky trail.
Resembling sauerkraut.

But despite all these features,
It’s very nice to eat,
I’ve heard that it’s a delicacy,
And I think it’s a treat.

Just lop off its head, bug eyes and all,
Using only a clipper for nails,
Then slice open its side.
(Ignore all the maroon scales.)

Once you’ve got its innards out,
Admire how they glow!
It’s called bioluminescence,
Hey, where did you go?
