I couldn't tell if it was the heat off of his breath or his body that entranced me at first, but I knew this—I had to get him away as quickly as possible. I pushed his arms off me and took a step back.
“Don’t touch me,” I said.
He looked pathetic but still managed to retain the rugged manliness he was known for. The pathetic side was a fake I knew. His muscles tightened and shifted as he raised an arm to pull me closer again. I let him do it. But then I changed my mind.
“No,” I said.
He put his hands up like a cop had just come in with a gun.
“Fine,” he said. “I’m not a rapist, I don’t force you.”
I nodded more to myself than anything.
“I didn’t say you were,” I said.
“Mhm,” he said.
He turned to other things and I stood there feeling stupid and alone. I could leave, but it didn’t seem that simple. I could stay, but what to do? He turned around again and I looked alert yet aloof.
“Are you going to make me beg?” he said.
I stared at him. His hands were reaching with allure.
