Moonlight Lune

Prelude:
When the Clouds Drift Away

The night was one of the most peaceful of the summer nights. Although there were dark clouds shading the full moon’s face, the atmosphere was light. The surface of the lake was as still as ever and reflected every detail of the world above.

Just on the water edge, under the great weeping willow that bent down over the water, sat a young elf of twenty. His head was bent and his blond hair lingered aimlessly around his face. In his hand he held a knife, with which he was making arrows. It seemed he was lost in concentration on his work, but just then something hit his head.

“Ouch!” he said and he picked up the shoe from the ground and looked up on at the tree. The frown on his face which reflected perfectly in his green eyes vanished and smiling, he said, “You’ll need more than just a shoe to hurt me, for I’m going to be the best ranger around these parts!” And he threw the shoe up the tree.

There on the tree branches another elf of about 16 caught the shoe and finger combing her jet black hair away from her face she said, “As you say you’re going to be a ranger, that’s future which has to come. For now the shoe will do the job well done!”

Again He started to work but his work was interrupted as the girl said, “Will you quit it for a minute please? From when you have met that ranger, Sciniti, you have been making arrows, throwing knives, fighting imaginary…”

“All right! All right! I’m through! What do you want me to do?” said the boy as he put his knife in his belt.

The girl sat on the bent down trunk of the willow and looking at her reflection in the water she said, “Nothing…Do you remember when we used to come here and play? Oh, How I miss those days. You all made me a family, when I needed a mother’s kindness, your mom was there for me, for father I have always had my guardian and as my brother I have you. But I guess both of us are soon to choose our own ways in life and that may change everything..:

Eeond looked into her black eyes that shone like two stars and said, “Why do you think things will change?”

Lune looked up at the sky. A slow wind had begun blowing and the clouds were drifting away from the face of the moon. She said, “I sense it. With you gone, everything will change.”

Eeond’s heart moved. He felt sad. Her words were not too hard to understand but they made their way right into his heart and made him think of what the future might bring. He had never thought of leaving. He had never thought how he would feel if he was without her. They had always been together. But was he going to leave? Had she felt it or just thought he would leave after meeting Sciniti?

“Who said I would leave?”, he said, trying not to show the sadness in his voice.

Lune stood up and grabbed a branch to control her balance. The wind blew and her long hair floated in the air, “I saw it. Last night. I had a dream. Not that I don’t see dreams too often, No, but this one was different. I was ill and crying. You were angry and, I don’t know, but I knew you were about to leave. And you said something to me in the dream but I didn’t get it…, a short sentence, not clear…I…”

Eeond thought about what she had just said, as he looked at the sky. The clouds had moved completely from the face of the moon by then and it shone as bright as ever. He smiled and said, “I’ve never seen the moon shine so bright.” he looked up the tree and what he saw made him feel confused.

Lune was standing up there, holding her head in both hands and she was in so unstable a position that any move would make her lose her balance. Eeond stood up slowly and said, “Lune, Are you okay?” But Lune didn’t answer for just then for just then she became unconscious and fallen down right into the water down below the tree.

“LUNE!”, Eeond shouted with shock. And he ran to the water and into the shallows until he could dive in.

Deep under it was dark and there was no way he could find her. But then he saw a light grow brighter, a bit further from where he was. He swam closer and what he saw was unbelievable.

Lune’s body floated in the water and her long black hair was changing to dazzling silver. Her body shone with a bright light and made all the water around her clear. Eeond cleared off his mind and shading his eyes with his hand he went closer and grabbed her waist. The second his hand made contact with her body, pain went through it, straight to his heart. He wanted to scream in pain but in order not to lose the last of his breath he just pressed his teeth together and pulled her up.

If the pain hadn’t been there taking her to the surface wouldn’t have been such a difficult job. At the last second when his lungs were burning severely, he reached the surface and gasped for air.

He held Lune’s head out of the water and grasped her tighter. The pain was growing more but he had to reach the water edge. He had to save her life even if he died of the pain himself. He moved both their bodies slowly to the edge and grabbing hold of the grasses and the bushes he managed to pullout of the water. He let go of Lune’s body for a second and the pain was gone. But remembering what was happening to her he sat up and leaned over her.

Her hair was shining silver like unicorn’s blood and her skin dazzling bright and made her look paler and at the same time more beautiful than ever. She was not breathing. He pressed his ear to her chest. The pain was there again, this time from his head past his spine and through his heart.

Her heart was still beating but it was weak. He didn’t know what to do. He was thinking of taking her home but right then someone said, “Don’t touch her!” and a woman wearing black robes suddenly appeared a few steps from them. She ran to Lune’s body and sat next to her. She nearly hit Eeond trying to push him away from Lune, and cut out his sight of Lune’s unconscious body. He only heard her murmur something and a second later Lune started coughing. Eeond ran to her other side and before the woman could say anything, he held Lune’s hand. The pain sprang up in his hand once again but it didn’t matter. “Lune! You’re okay? Talk to me.”

The woman talked from under her hood, “How is it possible? You can touch her!”. Lune was opening her eyes slowly. Eeond looked up and looked at the masked face of the woman and said, “I feel pain, but I can bear it.”

The woman looked at the sky. The clouds were closing on the moon’s face again, “It will soon be over. In a minute I say!” Eeond couldn’t understand what she said at first but what he saw next showed what she meant. Lune’s hair was changing to pitch black again and her skin didn’t reflect light anymore.

Lune opened her eyes and after blinking and looking at them both, sat up with Eeond’s help and said, “What happened Eeond. Why are you so wet?”

“Don’t worry. It was an accident, you are all wet too!” Eeond replied. The woman took off her robes and then her mask and said, “You are both wet and shocked of course and the thing is this is just the beginning.” And she wrapped her robe around them both and then she continued, “I must leave you now, but soon we’ll see each other again, soon.” And she disappeared with a popping sound.

Lune looked at Eeond saying, “I’m totally confused, what happened to me?” Eeond looked at her and said, “Something weird that scared the hell out of me. I can’t think of anything but that you are okay.” Lune looked into his eyes and then suddenly hugged him, and said, “You saved my life. That is the only thing I can think of. I’ll never forget that.” Eeond who was surprised by this, smiled and hugging her he said, “I’m happy I was there to help. Now, let’s go home. “Then he helped her get up and they started north towards their village.
