To watch the clock all day can not cause harm,
we hear the ticking everywhere we go.
I used to wear four watches up each arm,
and live in my alarm clock’s bright red glow.
We time our lives to fit a measured beat
and waste our minutes staring at the clock,
until the second hand becomes our feet,
they’re tapping out the seconds as we walk.
Yet while you know you’ll always be on time,
the hours are not always on your side,
for years will not relent their steady climb
just because behind your watch you hide.
And with each moment that we hold our breath,
the seconds bring us closer to our death.
