The Sea-Dance

There was a time
When I danced down the beach
Barefoot, free
Wild.
I followed no pattern
My feet carried me
To strange, surging rhythms
Of pure joy.
The waves would retreat
Beneath me, afraid
And return to fight again.
Laughter mixed
With the hoarse gulls’ cry,
Winds wove salt spray
Through my hair,
The seaside insinuated
Into my soul.

Time has eroded my body
As it nibbles at the beaches
I love so well.
I no longer dance,
I cannot.
My feet are buried
In the cool sands of age.
Fond memories and seashells
From days of frenzy
Litter my home.
I celebrate my beaches still
Quietly, softly.
The droplets of salt
Never wash from my hair.
In youth and in age,
A woman of the sea
Am I.

2007-05-25 Lanrete: This was an assignment for English class that I really liked. There was a photo of an old woman sitting on a beach among driftwood with her feet buried in the sand that we had to base the poem off of, which unfortunately I had to return. The poem is better with the photo.
