    I do not need you

I do not need you
but I desire you with an intensity
that frightens even me.

I do not need you
but at night I lie awake and cannot sleep
for wanting you so much

I do not need you
I tell myself every time I feel that rush
of uncontrolled yearning

I do not need you
and yet I still ache and feel the empty space
that nothing seems to fill

I do not need you
but I need something and I cannot express
in words what I’m lacking

I do not need you
is the mantra I have devised and repeat
every waking moment

I do not need you
extravagant indulgence, guilty pleasure
and dangerous habit

I do not need you
which makes these words that much more painful to say
because I love you so
