I ended up waking up at nine thirty eight in the morning because the damn bird wouldn’t stop squawking. I angrily got up and went over to the birds’ corner. I ripped the sheets down only to see that the bird wasn’t even there! I looked around the cabin, but couldn’t see him anywhere. I could hear him still though.
It sounded muzzled, like it was coming from somewhere small. Then I thought about where he was. It sounded like he was………in the chimney. Darn. This wasn’t gonna be fun. “Awe! Stupid bird! No wonder why you’re almost extinct!” I yelled up the chimney. That’s right about when all the ashes in the chimney fell onto my face because of the vibrations of my voice. It all landed on my face too. I was mad.
I got a bucket from the back of the cabin and headed off to the river for some water. I cleaned myself up and then filled the bucket up with water to the top. I carried it all the way back to the cabin. I set it outside the door and went to check in the eagle was still in the chimney. Yep, he was, and he was stuck pretty good.
I carefully climbed up a tree on the side of the cabin and took the bucket up with me. I started to slowly pour the water down the chimney until the squawking faded away completely. I dropped the bucket down the chimney after it was empty. I really didn’t care. Then I climbed back down to the ground.
I walked back into the cabin to see a wet black eagle standing next to the fireplace. The floor was covered in ash and water. I got a towel and cleaned him off as best I could. He was really starting to piss me off. I fixed his cage in the corner to even tighter than before and he was not going to get out again. I looked at the floor and knew I had to clean up again! I had just done this last night! I was growling as I did.
That was finally over and I could continue with what I was going to do, what ever that was. I looked at the clock on my PDO, and it read it was eleven twenty three already! That bird had wasted all the time I had until he got there. I sighed, and then went to collect more wood for the fireplace. It probably would be a cold night again. I wanted to be ready. It didn’t take that long though for some reason. Maybe it was just cause I was use to it by now.
I finished just in time. There were just a few minutes left and he should have been there. I stood outside the door and just waited there for him. I waited to hear the helicopter coming, or feel the gust from the ascending propellers. It never came. It was twelve thirty and he wasn’t there. I thought maybe that he was having trouble getting here. You know, he was just a little late. No big deal. So I waited some more.
After a while, I just got sick of waiting. I called him to see what was up. I dialed: “hel…hell…o? “ He sounded like he was in pain. “Hey, are you ok?” I asked. “No, I’m not. My helicopter crashed a little bit off the ground and the pilot has disappeared. I’m stranded and in dire need of help. Use the tracking device in your PDO to find me. Please hurry, and bring some medical stuff.” he finished, and then the phone went dead. I was officially worried and freaked out by then.
I quickly rummaged through the cabin for all the stuff I needed and put it into an old lunch box and flew out the door to find him. I ran around the forest, frantically trying to find Derek. It took me only about fifteen minutes to find him and he was in the last place I thought he would be. He was in the valley, just some what off from my house.
I rushed over to him and knelt down beside him in the dust and dirt. He was unconscious, but at least his vital signs were fine. That was one relief. I didn’t know what else to do. So I picked him up and kept him in my arms. I started my way slowly back to the cabin. He was a lightweight, but it still made my arms extremely sore. We eventually made our way to the cabin and I was relieved, and glad to see it. The trip to get to him seemed a lot shorter than it did carrying back there. I did, of course, have to stop a few times to rest.
I kicked open the door gently and wobbled inside to the couch. I plopped him down and clouds of dust sprayed from the old cushion because of his body weight. I coughed and stepped back for a moment while it cleared up most the way. Then I went back over and sat next to him on the couch.
He eventually woke up after a very long time. I just waited patiently with my hand on his chest. He slowly opened his eyes and blinked hard a few times to regain his vision. He was a little dazed and confused, since he was just at the crash site and now he’s in my cabin somehow. He finally spoke after a few more minutes of regaining his consciousness.
“So I guess you found me huh? What did you do, carry me?” “Yeah, actually I did. You don’t weigh that much.” I told him. “Wow, thanks. Anyways, did you happen to bring the supplies back too?” he asked. “No, I didn’t. I couldn’t carry them and you at the same time and I didn’t want to leave you here. I was only worried about you. I’ve been at your side the whole time. Maybe we should go get them though, before something happens to them. If you’re up to it that is.” I said.
“Yeah, actually I feel fine.” he said, then rose from the couch. He stood up and gave a small grimace of pain. He swayed a bit and finally found his balance. Not bad for a human fresh out of an accident. I was impressed. He turned around to say, “Are you ready?” I nodded and followed him out.
The hike was about a mile away or so. That gave us some time to talk to each other. “I’m so glad you came, I’ve been lonely since Midnight died.” I said. “What! Midnight died! But how?” he asked. “He was rammed in the chest by a deer and was barley breathing and unconscious. So I tried to carry him home.
I tried to go through the river, but a big floating log rammed me and I dropped him. It sent us down the river and over the falls. I passed out, and when I woke up, I was on a small shore. I never even found his body. I think scavengers or something ate him. I miss him so very much.” I said with tears in my eyes.
“I’m so sorry to hear that baby. I wished I could have been there. At least I’m here now to comfort you.” he said, then wiped the tears from my eyes. That was so sweet. Then he hugged me; I was entirely engulfed into his arms and chest. “I love you.” He said. My thoughts strayed. But then I said, “I love you too.”
We let go of each other and felt cool air where we had been warm from our bodies touching. Images of Midnight flashed through my mind.
We got to the crash site of twisted metal and puddles of fuel. We found all of the supplies were there and in tact. Everything I had asked him to bring was there. We gathered all the supplies and had to find a way to get them back. We brought two backpacks, but that was barely enough to hold it. We shoved as much as we could into Derek’s backpack, and zipped it. But when we did it, mine didn’t even zip! That sucked. We walked to the cabin with all the extra weight. I was fine, but Derek struggled a little.
We made it back to the cabin and I pushed the door open. I jumped when I did, because the door fell off the hinges and fell to the floor. It made a loud thud. I dropped everything that I held and it scattered across the floor. That was a thick hardwood door. It was very loud. My face turned red in embarrassment. I looked over at Derek. He just smiled and knelt down to help me pick the stuff up.
I was glad he really didn’t care. He was the only person I didn’t want to screw up in front of. Everyone else didn’t matter, but him. No duh. Anyways, we put all the stuff away in the right spots and cleaned up some again. We finished that in only a little bit of time.
We also had to fix the door last. I dreaded that. Who knew what could have gone wrong. I used new nails on the old hinges to secure it. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t gonna do that again. That was really bad. We pretty much turned in early, because by the time I was done, he had already fallen asleep. I made a bed on the floor so I wouldn’t have to kick him off the couch. I snuggled down and went to sleep also.
The next morning, we both awoke and ate. We spent the day doing things together. Like hiking, and swimming, and chores. It was nice to have some one to help me with them. We finished off the day with dinner, and an announcement from him.
“Hey, um...Amber.” he started. “Yeah?” I said all curious. “I have something to talk to you about.” It didn’t sound good. “What?” I asked. “Well, I called my family and talked to them about what’s going on, and, they told me something. We all decided I could live here, with you, in the forest. If you want that is. I just have to come back to them once a month. What do you think?”
Wow. That was a lot to throw to me at a moment. I had to think about it. That didn’t last long. “Well, you’d have to help with the chores. And you’ll have to give up TV and all electronic stuff except your phone. And it won’t be as easy as in the town. You do understand that, right?” I asked. “Yes, I do. So, can I stay with you?” he asked again. “Yes. I’d be happy if this was our cabin. You can stay here with me.” He was excited. That was all we said about it for the day.
He went back to the town to get all he needed and to say goodbye to some people. He had already graduated, so school wasn’t a problem. He came back with all his stuff and it was settled. I had somewhat of a social life again. It was cool.
This was a major turning point in my story. I wouldn’t be lonely again and would have some help with all the stuff. Plus it wasn’t like just a friend, it was my boyfriend. That meant we could share all the private moments we wanted. He would stay with me, and incase of an emergency, he could be there for me. It was more of an ensured life now. He had me, and I had him.
