It was the darkest time of night, when all should be asleep, but suddenly a mother jolted awake, frightened, by a terrible nightmare. Trying to calm herself, she repeated silently, “It was just a dream. Just a dream.” But even still, she couldn't shake the feeling that it had been real. Finally, she rose, pulled a robe over her nightgown, and went to look in her youngest child's room. The thick carpet muffled her footsteps, but only until she realized that Angel's bedroom door was open. Pounding down the hall, she swung into the room, and her eyes fell upon the empty child's bed.
“Angel!” She cried, collapsing at the bedside. She grabbed at the sheets, hoping beyond hope that her little girl hadn't gone. Hadn't disappeared. “Angel! Angel, where are you!” Desperation colored her voice, even as her half-screams woke the rest of the house.
Her husband came running into the room. When he saw the empty bed, he gasped, “Oh my God. Oh my God...Angel...
In the news the next morning, a headline proclaimed, “Three More Children Disappeared!” Below, it named them, all girls. Angelica Potter, Leslie McKennit, and Helen Derrik, aged six, five, and three, respectively.
