Once upon a midnight dreary
Once upon a day ago
Once upon a midnight dreary
There comes a time she has to know

I wrapped the darkness all about me
Like a blanket in the night
I stepped around him oh so softly
I was just upon his right

Once upon a midnight dreary
Once upon a day ago
Once upon a midnight dreary
There comes a time she has to know

Oh so silently I killed him
His blood it gurgled in his throat
And then he died there in his bedroom
And that was when the babe awoke

I could not leave the babe to scream
And so I took her in my arms
And then I spread my wings of leather
So we flew away from harm.

The babe wouldn’t let me leave her
So I raised her, by and by
She grew up to a young woman
And now I hear her softly sigh

I love that girl like my own daughter
