The winter could be so cold there, especially since almost everything on Vorseth was touching the waters. All the mercenaries, huddled in their tents or about blazing fires, wrapped tightly in any and every blanket they could find.
Though the Raven camp wasn’t far from a small town, they could not go in and stay. Mercenaries were respected and no one spoke down to them, but no one would offer them a place to stay when traveling or allow them the courtesy of extra blankets or food on a cold winter’s night.
So now, everyone was just waiting or at least trying not to freeze to death. Kitsune, Lydia, Captain and Arashi all sat about one fire. While Lydia and Kitsune had a fair share of blankets, Captain and Arashi had hardly any. Captain certainly could keep himself warm with all his muscle mass, but Arashi clearly, was cold, though he wouldn’t admit it. If any part of his body was warm, it was his right arm, but perhaps that was just because the feeling in that arm had gone long ago.
Captain shifted slightly and turned his glance to the two mercenaries who sat across from him, poking at the fire with a thin stick. “The client wants us to move out in two days,” he told them. “We should start packing things up in the morning.”
The two simply nodded, keeping their eyes on the warm fire. Arashi’s eyes shifted however, towards the forest just beyond the raven camp. He clenched his forearm tightly in his opposite hand. Perhaps it was just the flames catching the corner of his eye, but Arashi swore he saw something in the trees. His ice blue eyes flared like a ghost in the reflection of the warm flames as he turned to Kitsune and she turned right back to him, as if knowing he wanted to say something to her.
“What is it?” she questioned, quickly glancing over Arashi’s shoulder into the forest. “Did you see something, Arashi?”
Silence came over the group and all eyes turned to the darkened trees. Arashi’s eyes looked coolly into the darkness as he said, “Yeah, something’s out there.”
Before he hadn’t been sure about it, but now he knew it. There was no way to be sure, except to go into the forest, which was exactly what Arashi was going to do. He turned a quick glance in Captain’s direction and then stood; bringing his cannon up with him from behind the seat he had been in. As he walked, Kitsune picked up quickly after Arashi.
Nothing was spoken as the two walked towards the forest, the only sound that could be heard was that of the snow crunching under their feet. Arashi’s feet made more of an imprint, being that he was carrying more with him that Kitsune and her small sniper rifle. The two quickly passed the first line of trees and stopped, turning to look in every direction. They listened and questioned each other if they had seen anything. There was nothing and Arashi was starting to doubt himself. He and Kitsune were just about to turn back to the camp when something snapped and a little way down from where the two mercenaries were standing. Snow dropped off one of the trees and both turned their guns on the tree.
“You stay back Kitsune,” Arashi grumbled in a low whisper as he began to moved slowly forward. “I’ll take care of-!” Arashi suddenly stopped and Kitsune found him dropping to the ground.
The female mercenary turned to see what had happened, but ended up on the ground as well. Arashi saw her fall next to him and turned to look up. There stood something metallic, obviously a robot, an older model, and a human, a human that looked very familiar. Everything slowly began to blur as the human leaned down towards Arashi and then everything blacked out.
The figure looked down and then turned to the robot saying, “Take them back to the fort.” Then the figure walked away, leaving Arashi and Kitsune with a robot, who had just summoned about four more.
