I just needed to say, if any of yall are discovering you're pregnant right about now, I will bang my head on the desk :P

In the past 2 months more than half of my friends have announced pregnancy. This includes friends who've moved away, or dropped out of contact. This includes more than half the people I've ever met in my life. It's insane. Seriously, I was counting, when I realised it was a bit odd, and got to over 60. Which is.... insane. So maybe not half exactly, but christ. That is a LOT of love. Worldwide too. Anyone else thinking aliens? :P

You guys make my days complete ;)
You might not be very active, talkative, polished or present, but among your writings here, and those at elfwood wyvern's, lemonfingers, assorted e-books and short stories and blogs, you give me joy without ever making me brave the freezing cold (Australian - so really it's quite warm) Winter to venture out to the library :P

I've been having so much fun reading through so, so many random stories, that I definitely recommend it! You may have to trawl your way through a bunch of barely readable, unspellchecked swillish poetry written by emo 11 year old who cut themselves and hate everything, but every little while you're bound to find something really enjoyable. I would never even look at some of these genres in a bookstore or library, but I find myself reading gothic horror, erotica, stream of consciousness, humour, philosophy... whatever. I love it, and I wanted to say thankye :3

Ratings

PS. Incase anyone wasn't quite sure how the rating system works, just check out ratings.

-Basically, you can vote for a 1 - 9 score, 1 being the lowest and 9 the highest.
-There is no rubric or chart to show you what should fall into the category of a "9", you just need to use your own judgement.
-The score is tallied as an average from the last 20 votes.
-That means that if there aren't 20 votes, the average will have had a whole bunch of "zeros" factored into it, and will be very low even if the few people who voted for it voted "9".
-So vote! If you don't vote you're actually bringing people's averages down (I think? :P), and we need as many votes on as many pieces as you can read to get an accurate look at the whole thing ^_^

Phwoar! Tired! Hungry! More Tired!
I'm at that stage of exhaustion where you always ram your shoulders into door-jams because you know you're about to walk into a wall but you just don't have the energy to avoid it entirely ;)

But anyways, the reason I'm writing in here at all is this:

The other day I noticed that the "ratings" system goes largely un-used.
I personally would love to see even that small feedback on my work!
Some may not like a system that "ranks" work, but hell, some may not like that we only comment on some of the pieces we read, or that 1 entry will always win against the others in contests ;)

I'm here to get as much feedback on my work as possible, so if from now on everyone of you who actually bothers reading my pieces takes a few seconds to fill in the "rating" slot up the top of each writing, I would be very, very greatful :D

Attention flipsiders! Check out <poll:25>!

I had an idea earlier about the flipside organisation, what with all the recent discussion over time limits and kicking non participating members out, and etc etc etc :P

I'd really like to know what people feel about it, so can I get some feedback please? :D

IDEA:
Maybe instead of a time limit to participate in (like the suggested 6 weeks) and then kicking members off the member roster, we could have more member's areas on the roster? :)
At the moment we have Contest Hosts, and Contest Participants.
What I'd love to see would be an extra section named Flipside Supporters or something, and it'd be for people currently inactive on the participants list, or people who simply hang around, or use the Flipside Workshop and the like :D

Any participant who doesn't participate after some amount of time could simply be shifted to the supporters list, messaged to tell them what's going on (with a list of any current/upcoming contests they might be interested in) and that they could re-add themselves to the participants section once they've found a contest they're interested in.
That way we aren't kicking members out, we aren't banning anyone, but contest owners can see a reasonably accurate list of the amount of people available to participate in contests at any given time! Oh and also so they can create new contests specifically geared to the current active participants!

Whether or not the 'supporters' list could only consist of active members I don't know, I'd like to think that even inactive ones could hang around on that list. Maybe after awhile if we never saw any input from someone we could message them to find out why and if necessary remove them, but I don't think a supporters list should have as strict a time limit as the participants list.

And even that 'strict' time limit isn't to kick them out, we're just shifting them to a different members area until they're ready to participate again ;)
Or they could even move themselves, when thewy know they're busy or wont be hanging around contests much for awhile! :D

So that takes care of people like Moorn or SleepyD, who are definitely worthwhile and active members, but who are taking a little nap-time away from the contests ;)
Anyhoo, I personally think something like this is a much better approach to the whole problem of "banning members for not participating" (once you've thought it all the way through :P) and maintains the whole relaxed feel around flipside :)

*bows*

Please, feedback?

Update on me! Mwaha! Hello to all you lovlies, especially anyone pottering around flipside or free to write! :D

Anyways, recent writings and contests!

5.Contest Entries.Grandmother, in the War Diary contest.
I'm quite happy with this one, although I seem to take it a hell of a lot more seriously than anyone else does ;) So far about half the comments that have made on it have been about the humour, how funny it was... it's a tale of the murder of hundreds of thousands of people! Sheesh! ;)
Oh, but remember: don't shoot your Grandmother in the head dearies, it's just not nice.

5.Contest Entries.Desert Winds, in Feb's A Writing Competition.
Written for the theme "You're stuck in the middle of nowhere, with only a droplet of water left. What now?" I tried not to go with the obvious piece there, so I'd appreciate it if you'd check it out and tell me what you think :)

5.Contest Entries.A Dark and Stormy Night, in the Dark and Stormy@wiki] contest.
A scifi twist on the general gothic-horror setting, the end needs fixing! xD Opinions anyone?

Currently running: I Want You To Write Forgiveness.

ATTENTION: Writers wanted!

If any of you wish to contribute a short story for elftown's Herald ezine for the next issue (Fairytales) we're looking for original re-written versions of fairytales, 2000 words max.
We want as many as we can get, any style, any genre, whatever.
Just sit down and write one! xP

I was just pottering about (avoiding writing an essay) when I wandered across an Imaginary Interview written by Robin McKinley. Its not terribley interesting to anyone who is... oh, say, illiterate? Well, it is pointless, but I find her incredbly entertaining! ^^;

...and wanted to reply to things the said. but I cant, because shes famous, so into the diary (mwaha!) it goes!

Take, say, Athaliah. You havent heard of her, have you? No one has except people who know their Old Testament extremely well, including occasional non-believer nut cases like my husband, who likes odd or striking stories. Athaliah was queen of Judah for a while, by virtue of killing a lot of princes after the king conveniently died in battle. They get her later, of course. But the imagination-catching story about her is that after the young surviving prince is brought out of hiding and crowned, she comes alone to the courtyard crowded full of the priests and soldiers that are her betrayers and stops the celebration merely by her presence. Now thats strength of character. - McKinley

We had our celebrations ended that way plenty a time in school. Hell, children's egos are so fragile that if the teacher just stares at them long enough theyll freak out and stop talking (start rocking back and forth perhaps) but hey, theyre quiet! :)

and veering slightly off in a tangent here.... robin hood style...

We are indoctrinated. and the world is going to shite. At least, this suburban developed part of the world we live in. WHAT THE HELL. Do you realise that unless something significant crumbles up really really badly there will never ever be another robin hood? Can you imagine the 'keep off the grass' signs in Sherwood forest? Trying to run a revolution from... where? Central park? Your garage???? NO ONE fights for the poor, and if you gave to them I am so sure the tax department's gonna get you one way or the other, not to mention the fact that while some people may applaud you for stealing from the rich, you're still going to get fucked over because you left your DNA on the scene and no one's going to do jack to help you. Yeah sure funny stunt... that will end you in jail playing whoopsies with the scary folk who don't like people who play Robin Hood, because theres no respect for someone who not only stole something simply to give away, but got caught and ACTUALLY made the lives of those poor bastards worse if they accepted the mula.

So what about us childer growing up without a cause? Lets go raise ethiopian babies to be good christians! Did those infomercials never hear of the stolen generation??? Australia got done for attempting to do that....

We could sail the world exploring... oh wait, satellites. All discovered. Right. Forgot. So WHAT??? Dont mean to do the futility speech but if I don't want to get locked into the office building bureacracy until im 40 I'd better start off on my grand adventures soon....

So...? What? Anyone ever think about inventions? Ever think about when they happened? Think about it: with electricty and the assembly line came the age of almost all the gadgets I'm going to encounter in an average day. All of them, if you count the machines that make everything these days. So where are the new ones? How long ago did we achieve space flight? So WHY isn't anyone up there yet??? God, I have been brought up on scifi expecting a freakin space station to be the next logical step. So whats the delay? Money?

Yes of course. Because the world has no Robin Hood anymore. Who's going to pay for the advancement of the entire human race? You? Microsoft? The Government? Who's Government?!? Sure, we'd all be charming about that... just a fucking huge rise in taxes.. lovely, no, we dont mind!

We do. We arent Robin Hoods, the very notion of contributing our hard won bread and honey to a far distant cause is foreign and unacceptable. Why? I read a statement recently about capitolism, and how fear of poverty keeps us working classes where we belong... but I'm not one for anything to do with anything that might force me to discuss communism, so lets whoosh over that shall we, and move on?

We're locked into this litle cycle where our entire existence revolves around and depends on these tiny chits of paper and metal. Think about the children? Sound familiar? You may think you are, I mean, you're securing their financial situation, the environment they grow up in... but where the fuck are we growing to?

I'm a kid, (that isn't technically true, but it almost is!) and as far as I can see the next logical step is upwards and outwards, but all us mudgrubbers back down here are too scared to front up the money... and were going to suffer for it.

And while I can see with every little inch of my romantic section of brain, that a Robin Hood is SOOO necessary, theres no way I could or would drop the system I'm in to do it. Hell, all the forests here about burnt down a couple years back, and our garage is full of junk.

/rant.

Lovely, a diary :)

Well, Im going to be working on getting together an ezine here on writersco! All writers are welcome as staff or guest writers, and everyone who has any ideas... please! join us!

So far Im thinking to keep it very writing focussed, with exerpts from writersco member pieces, columns on anything from advice, (personal or professional) to weekly tutorials on writing styles and tips, to updates on the outside world of writing: book tours, publishers, new books from the old greats.. anything. We could also add in writerco poetry sections, information on publishers or getting published, messages or interviews from those who have been published (oh holiest of holy!) and anything the writers here want to see really!

If youre interested in helping at all or have suggestions for a name please contact me!!
