Chapter 2

The sirens had finished and police men came around the corner trailed by men dressed all in white, “They where quick.” The police officer stopped just in front of Raton, while the men dressed fully in white went straight passed him to check where the body had been. As the body had been moved before by the ambulance staff, they couldn’t inspect the body where its life had already been taken. However they where checking the bags for any blood and the floor for any items of the victim that had been left behind.

There search wasn’t successful. They didn’t find anything of great use, a small smidgen of blood on the floor from. They added a small paper sticker with a bold black number one on a white background next to the blood. After that they noted the blood on their report and the most professional looking one walked over to Raton. As he got closer he saw that the hat he was wearing was slightly different and he had two badges attached to the right side of his blue blazer, next to the pocket which housed a pen.

"So, what did you see?" He was straight to the point and spoke with a thick southern accent. His face was unshaved and his hair was black with traces of ageing. He looked very serious however his voice was quick.

"Erm, not much ... A man, slightly taller than me, running away from the dead guy." Raton was renowned for his speeches and his way with the language but the alcohol was also affecting that. The officer next to the chief laughed.

"Good ol' invisible man." He joked. The chief looked at him raising an eyebrow, "Sorry Sir ..."

The chief sighed and then start questioning again, "Are you sure you didn't see anything else, all details would help the enquiry a lot. This is not a mere investigation but a very serious one." He paused taking his hat off and wiped his brow. "At the end of the day, we have a mad man armed with a pistol running around town central that has committed one murder already and will probably commit others to get out of this mess. The odds are against us and a lot of people's lives are in danger."

Raton stood and began to worry. With his mind not being as clear as normal, he hadn't thought what was going to happen after this. This fact that a man, who had not been identified and had already killed, was in the center of the town capable of killing again. "Well ... there's not much I could make out. It was dark and I am a little drunk.... although as he ran out into the light I saw that his hair was scruffy and black-brown." He wasn't one hundred percent sure; however he thought he would be best of giving all the details possible to the police to aid the capture of the fugitive.

"It doesn't narrow it down much but at least we know that. In the morning when you’re sober would you mind giving us a statement down at the station?" The question was rhetorical however he nodded all the same to confirm that he would. "Please try to remember anything about the killer. We are going to have all the possible officers patrolling the area." At that he turned and went back to discussing matters with the forensics officers in the white.

He stood there trying to recall extra details, but was some removed from the site by a police officer who said he would take him back to his house. All the way home Raton was thing about the murder and wishing he had not being so drunk. Every time they passed a small alley way he looked expecting to see the killer. He told himself he wouldn't and forced the thoughts from his mind. After all the excitement he felt tired and all he wanted to do was go back home and rest. When the automobile parked up along side his flat he pulled himself out and felt the cold hit him. He thanked the officer and started upstairs. He opened the door and heard the car from behind him pull out and go down he straight down the street.

When he got in the building he heard the familiar humming of the central heating which he welcomed as he climbed up the stairs. He had purchased a small apartment on the second floor for 5 years however he had already lived there for 4 and knew he would have to renew the lease. He often complained of the small wages teachers where paid. As soon as he got to his door he removed the set of keys from his pocket and found the correct match for the lock in front of him. He turned the key and went though the door closing it when he reached the other side of it. He got changed and collapsed on his bed; he fell to sleep almost automatically.
