If you had the option would you rather be stupid and ignorant or would you rather be smart? Nearly everyone will choose a good education over being ignorant but have you ever considered the consequences. Did you ever pause to comprehend some of the problems education may represent.

Ignorance is bliss. Many have heard the saying yet few have bothered to decode it. It usually passes as one of those clichés created by someone around Shakespearian times, utterly confusing and not worth pondering. They are wrong. If you spare a second thought towards the saying, you would understand that it states the unnerving truth.

You’re in the midst of a war, sirens go off signaling a bomb threat. The only problem is, you’re ignorant. No thought even enters your mind of what the warning means. Soon the savage whistling of a falling bomb fills the frigid air but the only discomfort it causes you is the onset of a splitting headache. You continue on your way, ambling towards wherever you were going before the disruption until the bomb hits, destroying your world. You pass on feeling no fear, just a dull throbbing in your temples. No horror of you’re final few moments, no feeling of helplessness because you were too ignorant of the dire consequences in which you were treading.

Now look at it from the educated perspective.

Same situation. Same wailing sirens and whistling bombs. Different thoughts composing in your mind. You hear the sirens and are busy contemplating whether or not it’s a drill or if you’re in danger. You continue on at your relaxed pace until the whistling begins. Now you know that these is no drill. Your mind clouds in the throws of panic. Your conscience is overloaded with guilt about things you won’t get to correct or do. Finally you realize that you must find shelter but as you scramble another part of you realizes that it’s already too late. It’s over.

In the end you came to the same fate, education didn’t prevent that. However, passing on in ignorance was only preluded by minor irritations. Being educated brought on advanced terror and helplessness. While education generally brings with it a chance of survival, it also brings unwanted things to the front. Our decision is, does the discomfort outweigh the ignorance? We couldn’t say for sure unless we are educated and by then it’s too late so we may never know.

2007-02-27 miniCruzer: Are you saying you want to be stupid? Are you willing to be stupid just so you won't be afraid of death? I say! Being smart has WAY more advantages. I think fear of death only makes us a more vulnerable person.

2007-02-27 Calliope: Mini it's under musings for a reason. Just stuff to make a person think, doesn't mean I agree with it all :P

2007-02-27 miniCruzer: It was implied

2007-02-28 Calliope: Implications are just that, implications. While there are situations it would be more beneficial to be uneducated there are man where it's more beneficial to be educated. Everything has it's pros and cons.

2007-02-28 miniCruzer: Therefore, it would be just as good to be uneducated as it would to be smart. I never really thought of it that way. It always seems that its better to be smart.

If pro and con are opposite, does that mean the opposite of progress is congress?

2007-02-28 Calliope: Most congresses are opposite progress yes.

2007-02-28 miniCruzer: Would this apply to the U.S. Congress?

2007-03-01 Calliope: I couldn't say, I'm not American and therefore aren't based well enough on them. However, if the media here is anything to go by... :P

2007-03-01 miniCruzer: Thats what I thought you might say, living in Canada and all. It was a proverb I read. I got a list of proverbs like, "Why do round pizzas come in square boxes?" Well, tis simple. Its cheaper to make square boxes. And "You know that little black indestructible box you find on airplanes? Why don't they make the entire plane out of that?" Simple, again. The plane would be to heavy to fly.
