Scene 2: San Francisco Otters

After the cool down the new young woman peeled off her swim cap and goggles then proceeded to shake out her short ebony hair and looked around the deck with light gray, almost silver eyes till she spotted Jessie. The team captain was too busy talking to her friends to notice her as she walked up to them,

“Hi, I’m Lena. I heard you were the team captain so I thought I’d introduce myself.”

She held out her hand. Jessie turned around to glare at Lena and her extended hand with a sour face and sneered, ignoring the hand,

“Whoa. You’re new; I don’t think you have the status to talk to me yet. I don’t talk to new and worthless dorks. So piss off!” Samantha and Amy laughed before Samantha shouldered past Lena,

“Yeah, so get lost as fast as you can sprint!” They laughed again and walked out of the pool area, leaving Lena standing alone as the rest of the girls on the swim team departed, walking around her blushing form. The swim coach’s eyes had followed Jessie and her friends out then turned to look in the direction of the new swimmer before he picked at a speck on his form fitting sweater and walked towards her.

“You’re Lena right?” Lena nodded; her cheeks still a little pink from anger,

“Well don’t mind Jessie too much, I tolerate her attitude because she is a heck of a fast swimmer, but you! “ Carl grinned, showing off perfect white teeth, “You were just spectacular! You blew her out of the H 2 O baby!” Lena lowered her head and her cheeks grew even redder from blushing after that raising an eyebrow as she noticed that Carl was wearing feminine flip-flops,

“Honestly sir, I didn’t mean to offend her-“

“Who cares about her feelings? Jessie isn’t a very nice person, I think you realize that already but she’s had a beating coming from all of her arrogance. Anyways,” The coach switched the subject as Lena brought up her head with the eyebrow still raised, “Where did you learn to swim like that? I do believe it was purely natural talent I saw in this pool today.” Lena lowered her silver eyes and shuffled her feet slowly.

“I… uh, learned in the sea all along the east coast and in the great lakes. I moved here from New York. I was state champion in more than eight events and all the relays there and things… started getting violent between some of my closest competitors so, I moved to California; here.”

Carl beamed. “Well, glad to have you with us! You’re a San Francisco Otter now! Do you live with your parents or a roommate or something?”

“I live…alone.” He glanced at his watch then behind her toward the door then back at Lena, “I have to make sure all of the girls get safely home.”

She nodded slightly,
“I have a bike.”

“Okay, I’ll see you on Monday after the first day of school and… if Jessie bugs you again tell me and I’ll talk to her.”

“See you later then, and thanks.” Carl nodded and grabbed his bag and walked out of the pool area. Lena watched him go and shook her head chuckling to herself and locking the pool door after him. The locker room was empty; she knew that but the gym… She glanced into the black, noticing the glowing EXIT signs. She would have to take a chance.
