I write this now by lantern light
For day has faded into night
Outside I hear a wild beast roar
But I'm not frightened anymore
He's been here many times before
The Princess Gwyneth is at rest
With jewels sprinkled 'round her nest
And here beware her guardian
For it will kill trespassing man
Horrid nightmares before it ran
The King and Queen lie still in bed
A golden crown upon each head
Beside them they do also keep
One who protects them in their sleep
And scares away the things that creep
He is the greatest in the land
A Knight of lore is here at hand
He too is slumbering free of fear
Because no creature dares come near
For if they try then he will hear
And as these grand ones sleeping fast
Dream of wonderful things that last
I humble bard am still awake
And thinking of the tales I make
Of things that seem real but are fake
For…
I was never a bard
The lantern is my light
And the beast is my cat
Who wants in for the night
Princesses are sisters
And guardians stuffed bears
The Knight is my brother
Who snores more than he scares
King and Queen; my parents
Their protector; my dog
Who's so lily livered
That she'd run from a frog
All these things I have made
Into something unreal
But could that be a pen
Or a feather I feel?
