[Talenya]: 299.Poetry.You Were Always the One

Note: A poem written through a really big and bad break-up, when I was still pining for them... It was what was felt at the time, but you know how it is when blinded by a break-up.

You were always the one I was looking for,
You never could understand why I chose you,
But—there was never anything for me to choose,
You were the one from the start,
And my heart knew the moment we met,
It just took my brain a little to catch on.
You’re the one who taught me what real love is like,
Though you may deny it,
You can’t see how you are good for me,
And I laugh and cry for it.
It’s not that you’re good or bad for me,
Or how good or bad I am for you,
But how good we are together,
How good we can make our life.
But—I guess that doesn’t matter,
Now that you have left me,
I’ve wept and screamed,
And wished and dreamed,
It’s now time I start to stop and move on.
How much it hurts will soon fade away,
As I seal the wound where my heart no longer resides,
For you have it willing or not,
Treat it well and know I still care,
Though I can’t show you any more,
I’m now locked in silence forever more.
I get to watch you from a far,
I get to know you’re safe and warm,
I get to see you once in awhile,
Though never to touch,
Never more to kiss,
Never more to know how it feels to be whole again,
The price I pay for this is little enough,
Besides after all my dignity is shot,
My pride is gone,
And only my honor keeps me moving on.
But I’ll be okay and I’ll be alright,
I always seem to bounce back,
My smile will never be as bright,
My laughter as carefree,
My eyes have lost some of their sparkle,
But you know how it goes,
As they say “the show goes on” and “you pay to play”…
