This is a poem I wrote for a class I was taking in which we were reading The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. If you've read the book you'll understand the poem. It is written from Roger Chillingworth's point of view.

Buried deep behind your eyes
I see the twisting, severed lies
the edge of sanity has been reached;
the walls of my locked-up mind breached

I beg and plead and ask you here;
come back, come back, to me my dear
you know something I do not
you plan to leave me here to rot

In defense, I obsess
Never will his poor soul rest
I plan to keep him locked away
to hide my pain from you, I say

Return unto me your lost soul
without you, the world is cold
if there's nothing I can do...
maybe I should fade away, too.
