What is it with poetry, really?

I don't like poetry in general. There are several, at least semi-valid reasons for it, but I won't deny that some of it wasn't bad attitude on my part.
And even I do like poetry. Well, certain poetry. I like clear, traditionally rhymed and alliterative Finnish poetry that tells the reader a story. I suppose it should be rather called a traditional song without instruments (then again, I hate Finnish singing...).

However, the two biggest issuest I have with poetry is that poems 1) too often require interpreting and 2) need to be sounded out to make anything of them.

I have recently tried to make a poem and figured out some more difficulties I have with them. When writing prose, I only have to worry about the meaning of words, and in case of dialogue, its fluency. Dialogue fluency comes to me rather easily since I've had to think about that all the time. The meanings of words are tricky. English isn't my native language, and even in Finnish I have to think what a certain word means, what do I think it means for others and so on. I usually can't use words whose definitions are too unknown, wide or contradictory for me. Therefore, I never seriously use the word "love", I only put it in the mouths of ignorant characters.

Along comes poetry. In poetry, it's difficult to use words by just using their meaning. I need to think about rhyming, alliteration, verse, amount of syllables, general sound and so forth. I'm not particularly good with those and I have no real interest in getting good at it. My brain isn't good at multitasking that much.
