2006-05-08 (Later): Lost me at the fourth paragraph, but I was quite moved regardless of being slightly disorientated.

2006-05-14 Kaimee: The fourth paragraph explains what happened! :P The man (the grey solid smudge in the dawn light) had been cheating with this girl. For some reason they argued (he had found out his wife was pregnant?) and when she met the pregnant wife too she ran away.
Now, the child has died in an accident with a tractor. The man is distraught and can't be found, and his wife - who believed all along that her husband loves some other woman - swallows her pride and phones her, asks her to help her find her missing husband.
She finds him where she expected to, in their old secret meeting place, but she realises that he never really loved her, and that he wasn't there in that garden for her, but because it was a place of mystery, and dreams, "A place where a child’s laugh could echo out of the mists and for at least a second, you could imagine it was real."

..end explanation :P It needs working on and polishing, and swirling into something proper, but this is all I have for now ;)
