Version 1
I was walking alone in this hot, heavy twilight and suddenly it seemed to me that the world was going to end.
Framed perfectly on the horizon at the end of the street – where the world seemed to drop off and down into a million years of oblivion, but was really just the crest of a hill – a huge crimson circle spun itself out of the ground, and shimmered up slowly into the dusk born stars. I stood there, moonstruck and still, and watched the night settle over the dry sighing grasses, and steal all the reds from the world.
Version 2
I walked home in the hot, heavy twilight, and watched the night ascend the sky, as dark climbed shyly above the streetlights and the sounds of dinner reached out from the windows I passed.
Framed perfectly on the horizon at the end of the street, between the big old bark-streaked gums, which glowed hot in the evening, a hugely crimson circle spun itself out of the ground, and shimmered up heavily into the dusk born stars.
I stood there, moonstruck and still, and watched the night settle over the dry sighing grasses, and steal all the day from the world.
