“And if I don’t take the new assignment?”
“You know what happened to those before you, or need I remind you?” The devil took the man’s silence as a ‘no’ to his question.

He can remember the look that covered the man’s face as he had been forced to push him over the edge.
And all it was at the bottom was sharp rocks.

The man shuddered away from the thought and took the piece of paper and began to read.
“His name is Barry. That should be enough for you to do this. No? Ok. He has certain issues, which he takes out on his family. Things have tried to be have done, but nothing worked. So I have been asked to... dispose of him. And now I am asking you.”

That was as far as he got, as his mind drifted from the writing on the paper and thought more and more of how he would escape this life.

How had all this happened anyway?

He can remember almost the exact day. He held the knife in his hand, and he realised that he didn’t want to shed blood again. He didn’t want to re-open the wounds that he made before. I don’t wan to do this anymore he thought I want something worthwhile to do with my life. And that was all the devil needed. As soon as he went to sleep, the devil knocked on the door in his mind, and it was opened immediately.
The next day he awoke in a different surrounding than he went to sleep in and found himself in the one place he really didn’t want to be: in front of the devil.
And from that moment, he was locked into this job. Although it isn’t all bad he thought to himself, there is the fact that I can do anything I want between assignment and I get entrance to anywhere I want. Which is never a bad thing. He concluded. But that doesn’t change the fact that I don’t want to kill anyone anymore. I have killed to many people in the last few years. And most of them I didn’t even know what they had done. I am not always told. He paused and shook his head.
He turned his attention back to the piece of paper in his hand. He knew he had to do this. Or he would get pushed off the edge like the other guy. Except he wouldn’t be the one doing the pushing.
Besides it always gave him time to forget everything else. And sometimes he even got to choose how long he took to kill them and the way. That always gave him plenty of flexiblity.
