I was watching 20/20 on ABC last night and it was about scams and all that stuff. A part in the section was about are designer brands really better? 20/20 asked a group of girls why they like designer brands better. One of the girls said it makes you popular. 20/20 asked them what popularity is, and they said, "Popularity is when you have expensive clothes and you get to hang out with all the other girls and they like you."

What is this world coming to? You have to have expensive clothing to be liked. I'd rather spend money on generic brands and be liked for who I am and not what I have. 20/20 interviewed a store owner about designer brands, and there was a pair of jeans for a kid that cost $300, and it was faded to make it look "cool". 20/20 asked why you would spend that much money on a kid who would grow out of it in a year. All the owner had to say was that it is cool and durable. It doesn't fade when you wash if 5 times. So 20/20 washed it 5 times at a Laundry Mat. It looked the same. After 20 washes of both brands, the generic brand was just slightly faded, but it looked like it was supposed to be that way.

So I guess what I'm trying to say here is why do we have to spend money to be liked? Why should we go spend hundreds of dollars on faded jeans, when we can take them home and rub them down with sandpaper? It gives the same effect, and what's so professional about sanding jeans? It's called Do-It-Yourself! Most people can't tell the difference between designer and generic, so why spend the money if your expensive clothes will go unoticed. I went to a school that required uniform. A lot of people objected to this, but they really didn't see the reason why it was required of them to wear uniforms. I noticed about that school is that there was few / no bullying going on. Uniforms contributed to a bully-free environment. Uniform was: Kahki / Navy blue dress pants w/ belt. Maroon / navy blue / white / baby blue polo / longsleeve shirt. Hair no lower than the eyes for boys. Girls had the same dress code, but they could wear skorts or whatever those things are. Everyone looked like they shopped from the same store. No one could tell the difference between clothing. Students weren't distracted by other's clothing.

I am not totally against the fact that we should all stop buying designer brand. Some people can afford the best. I don't blame a person for buying designer brand for its durability. But what if you did the math? If you buy 3 pairs of designer jeans every four months, and you bought 3 pairs of generic brand jeans every 2 months, wouldn't it all come down to the fact that you save more money, and get more for your money? Well, I don't think we should all stop buying designer brands, but I just want us to realize that what we wear shouldn't make us who we are. Some people (I'm not saying all) who buy designer brands because it "makes them popular" tend to be overly critical about people who buy generic.

Accpet the fact that clothes are overrated! Accept it! Accept it!!!
