Deeper Sense
Prologue

Tryste is in a dim cathedral, lit only by the hundreds of candles floating about. Despite the number of candles, each waxen piece gives off little light. He recognizes the building as the Basilica Temore in Me’Groe. Though there is not so much as a breeze inside, Tryste can hear the faint sound of howling winds in the distance, as well as the monotonous chanting of priests. He walks through the empty building, admiring the serene stained-glass windows.
Suddenly, the doors fly open, and the wind that had only been hinted at roars into the church. The candles go out simultaneously, and the hall is shrouded in blackness. Tryste looks around, despite being unable to see. The wind continues to blow mercilessly, stinging his eyes and skin.

Above his head, a dim, pulsating red light begins to glow. Out of habit, he looks up. Nothing but the stained-glass is visible, and the depictions have changed. Now, instead of beautiful images, the renderings are contorted and malicious. The saints above his head glare down at him with crimson eyes, their lips drawn back to reveal yellowed, crooked fangs. Some cast accusing fingers at him, others merely glower.

The gusts pick up, battering Tryste’s body so fiercely that they leave open cuts on his flesh. The chanting of the priests changes to condemning words and curses. “Demon,” they sing in their droning, collective voice, “Hellion. Sinner. Your damnable birth is the cause of this. You have shattered innocence. Demon! Monster! Die!” The stained-glass saints burst violently into millions of tiny slivers, raining down on him, slicing and embedding themselves in his skin. He lets out a horrified, pained shriek.

And he wakes.
