My Begetter

Dedicated to my father.

I once knew a great paladin, a hero of my days;
his heart was cool and tender,
and I followed all his ways.
He toiled through my childhood
and worked the whole day through.
He loved me and my mother and through his effort,
this he proved.
Drudgery and grind were often his only friends,
and upon the open field,
he struggled till the end.
His muscles grew and hardened while his life wasted away.
All this just to be pardoned; he sacrificed his days.
A railroad worker tried and true,
but a father even greater,
it’s he I owe my deepest thanks to; I’ll be his vindicator.
My loneliness I cannot bear, so I’ll not think of his demise.
I’d rather think of playful days, than dwell on our goodbyes.
My life is privileged because of him,
and this gift I’ll not forget,
so now let me now work all of my days,
and repay this great unsettled debt.
