The Way We Were

I remember when we were small
And you would stand beneath my window
Throwing stones to wake me up
My mother got so angry
When you broke the glass

We promised, back then
That we’d never grow old

I remember when we were young
Hiding under the blankets, giggling
To be up so late at night
Your father got so angry

But we were not men

Running through fields and streams
And soaking our jeans in mud
How our parents howled
