A few more minutes later I had made it there. I stood on a branch and I was like twenty feet up. I look down for a moment. Yikes! I could see the blue light from up there. I was finally at the clearing.
I saw it. It was actually a blue flame surrounded in a stone circle on the ground. I could also see the person in charge of making the fire. It was a fairly young girl, about my age or maybe a year younger. I watched her as I hid in the tree.
I thought the flames may have been some sort of witchcraft or something, but then I saw the flames fade back to their normal colors. Then she reached down and grabbed a handful of some sort of power out of what looked like tiny burlap sack and tossed it in the fire. The fire roared into a beautiful dark purple. It was so fascinating to watch.
The girl herself was beautiful too. She had long, dark, brown, shining hair that was blowing in the slight breeze. She was a little shorter than me and had tan-ish skin, unlike my whiter skin. She also had brilliant green eyes; just as brilliant as the smile she had as she sat near the fire. She wore a deer skin loin clothe and a deer skin top too. She was thin, and had an unusual look about her face.
I thought she might have already known where I was. “I know you’re up there. You can come down, I won’t hurt you.” She yelled up to me in a gentle Indian accented voice.
I tried to climb halfway down, and then jumped down the other half. I landed on my feet and stood up. I carefully approached the Indian girl and stood a couple of feet away still. “What? You’ve never seen an Indian girl before? I’m harmless, you can come closer.” She said. I edged over slowly and stood by her then.
It was a moment of awkward silence. She seemed fine with it as she tended to the now dark green flames. “So….. How did you change the colors of the flames?” I asked. “It’s an Indian secret I discovered. I used a special type of stone and ground it into a powder to throw in. Lovely isn’t it?” she said. “Yes, it sure is.” I said in a low voice.
I was a little nervous though, mainly because I didn’t know who she was. “Not to try to be rude or anything, but, who are you?” I asked. “Oh! I’m sorry, let me introduce myself: I am Kilala of the native Indian tribe. We have lived in this forest for many of years and date far back, father than I remember. May I ask your name as well girl stranger?” She said. “Of course! I’m Amber. And the reason I live here is a long story I don’t think you’d be interested in.” I explained.
Before she had a chance to reply, we had a little surprise. There was a small rustling in the bushes to our left. Then, a great timberland wolf jumped out with great height. He flew through the air right to where I was standing. He went full on into me and his claws ripped through my chest. I was violently thrown back, torso first, then limbs followed. I slammed against the ground and my head hit a rock on the ground.
I saw black even though my eyes were still open. Then my eyelids started to slide down until they were just completely shut. Then my brain shut down. What a bad thing to happen when I was meeting a new friend. Of course it had to happen when I was meeting some one nice for the first time.
Kilala was a beautiful name, and she seemed really nice too. I was thinking about it as I lay there, the blow sticking my mind on her as my only possible thought. She was beautiful, kind and smart to have figured it out about the flames. And it was cool to find others living in the forest that weren’t just hikers or like me. The flames of the colored fire danced in my head as I went out for the night.
