Fan Fiction Owner Bans & Guidelines
Respecting artists
Hello all! You must be an author of fan fiction! As such an author, it's important for you to respect the boundaries and wishes of the original artist. Therefore, and to make your life easier, we have created a list of authors who do
not approve of fan fiction or who have restrictions for fan fiction based on their works.
[
!Disclaimer!] - By writing
unapproved fan fiction you're taking the chance that you will receive harsh penalties and a stained reputation as an author. Furthermore, in some cases, the original author considers any and all fan fiction to be open for the taking. In other words...what you write can be used/rewritten by the original author, made into a "real" novel, and sold - while you get
nothing.
No Fan Fiction
These authors DON'T allow fan fiction, so don't upload it here (or anywhere)!
Anne Rice: NO
As Anne states on her website
www.annerice.com ,
"IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM ANNE ON 'FAN FICTION'
Anne has posted the following message regarding fan fiction: "I do not allow fan fiction. The characters are copyrighted. It upsets me terribly to even think about fan fiction with my characters. I advise my readers to write your own original stories with your own characters. It is absolutely essential that you respect my wishes."
Mercedes Lackey: NO
As stated on her website
http://www.mercedeslackey.com/am_writing.html ,
"Secondly, at this point, it is not legal nor permissible for you to publish any fiction based on my copyrighted works on the net. Nor is it legal for you to publish a novel-length work in ANY form. My agent reluctantly permits paper publication of short fiction in fanzines; he is inclined to go ballistic over anything longer than a short-story. He has not yet granted permission to anyone to publish net fan-fiction."

Fan Fiction Within Limits
These authors allow fan fiction, but have certain guidelines.
Anne McCaffrey:YES, but complicated and probably not a good idea?
See her detailed guidelines:

JK Rowling: YES, PG-rated and non-commercial only
As stated in the BBC article, "Rowling backs Potter fan fiction," found at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3753001.stm ,
"JK Rowling's reaction is that she is very flattered by the fact there is such great interest in her Harry Potter series and that people take the time to write their own stories. [
...] If young children were to stumble on Harry Potter in a an x-rated story, that would be a problem."
George Lucas: YES, but there cannot be any sex and minimal swearing in the fan-fiction.
Meg Cabot: YES, but you can only post them on her forum, so for the rest of the site it is a 'no.'
