Personal History
Marten was born and raised on a small farm in a place of no great consequence. He learned the trade of carpentry from his father, as well as metal smithing and tool making. He entered a novitiate with the Knighthood of the Watch at the age of 12, and promptly developed a reputation for disappearing at random times to go “adventuring”. Of course, his superiors and his parents were not amused.
Sir Himmel, Preceptor of the Lion’s Gate Order, the Order with which the young lad was being trained, saw a certain potential in the boy. He took him aside and made a deal, plenty of adventure, if he would apply himself on the practice field enough to satisfy the field marshals and the training overseers. Marten readily accepted. Within a short time he had won his spurs and was bequeathed his armor, and given the rank of Knight Errant.
Sir Hummel found plenty of action for Marten, who only wandered minimally, to his credit, in the accomplishment of his duties. Over time he became acquainted with King Legge or Eire, and the King found him useful on several occasions. He named Marten his personal envoy, but even more, a sort of private agent to deal with crisis’s of certain delicacy.
Skills
In the course of his adventurous and often meandering life, Marten acquired skills such as picking locks, cooking, sewing, and mending his own boots. He has a very practical mind and is fairly good at figuring things out. He has a mind for mechanics as well, and has put it to use with certain traps and switches and mechanisms to be found in certain places he always seems to find himself. He’s not unfamiliar with certain forms of magic, and can perform some useful feats given time and inclination, such as jamming doors against pursuers.
Hereditary Skills
Marten is a Nord, and he has been gifted as such with a powerful voice. In the sense of speaking and influencing some minds to see things his way. And as an offensive weapon to confuse or even bring harm to an opponent. An example being the fight between him and Fenris, a powerful wolf creature, in which he literally shouted Fenris blind. The power of his voice has it's drawbacks, as once used at it's full power, it leaves him silent for several days.
Quirks
Marten is something of a kleptomaniac. He often picks up things for no apparent reason, pockets them, or examines them. This often as not is a major source of trouble for him. He is energetic and wild, even willful, and this is simply another source of trouble for him, as he rushes headlong into situations without thinking and considering the consequences.
