The Beginning

The thunder booms through the darkening night as rain beats the sodden ground. Cries of a mother giving birth can be heard throughout the village. The small shack where the cries take place is cramped and full of people. The mother lying on a bed while men and women run amuck. Frantically grabbing towells for the child to be. After hours of labour a child is born. A boy with hair black as the stormy skies and eyes a frosty blue. This is the last the household will see of the child. As thunder claps the door bursts open revealing what seems only to be rain and darkness. But in steps an old man in black, cloaked from head to toe. Hunched and hidden within a hood, he walks towards the mother whome holds her newborn child. Frightened, she screams at him, for she knows who he is.

"Death!" she cries, pulling the baby towards her, "You shant take my baby!"

The hooded man walks closer still, reaching inside his cloak. "But I must."
With his hand in his pocket he whispers, "To all who value the life that they live, look away and shut thy eyes." The fightened inhabitance of the room turn away and huddle against the wall. All except the mother.
"Very well then." he replied, pulling an emerald necklace out of his pocket and holding it over the silent baby. It shone and swirled, floating within what seemed to be a medallion hollowed out. The mother took only one glance and fell instantly to her bed, never to awaken again. But the child held his hands up to the shining object above him and stared at what should have been his death.

Astonished, the old man gasped and swung the necklace in front of the baby and followed the child's eyes intently. They were watching the green orb with perfect rhythm.
"Impossible." He muttered in confusion. The man stood there staring at the child and then he smiled.
"The child will be spared..."

The slam of the cottage door startled the crowd by the wall and they slowly opened their eyes to the empty room. A silent fear befell them and they gingerly walked towards the bed. A young nurse girl held out her hand and laid it upon the mothers face.
"She is dead," the girl said meekly... then turning to look around at the silent group asked, "..But where is the child?"
