The day before, his girlfriend had hinted at a break-up, and that left his heart in turmoil. Granted, it was beyond his control, but he was supposed to talk with her that morning at school.
When the phone rang suddenly, he was hesitant to answer, fearing that with that call, his heart would be broken.
Slowly, he grabbed the phone off the hook.
"Hello?" He said softly as a familiar voice greeted him, and he sighed quietly to himself. The time for answers had arrived.
"Hello Jim. It's Haley."
He sighed again, and took a deep breath, trying to brace himself for the news ahead.
"I thought it was you. I was a bit upset that school was cancelled. I wanted to talk to you about what to do."
Her voice was soft as she began. "Jim, you know how I feel about you. I just don't want to see you get into any trouble."
"For you, anything would be worth it."
"I know, but...it's just...Jim, I think it would be best for us if..."
The tears brimmed against his eyelashes, as he slowly whispered the rest of her sentence.
"If we broke up..." He said, while the tears began to trail down his cheeks.
She sighed, and continued. "I know this is hard. I've never felt this way about anyone before. It's just, you're nineteen, and my mother doesn't approve of us. I don't want her to get you in trouble."
Though she couldn't see it, he nodded, and inhaled again. "I understand. It's for the best."
With a shaking voice, she told him once again how she felt about him, and told him how much he meant to her. And with a softly spoken farewell, she was gone.
As he hung up the phone, he felt his tears burning down his face. And with a painful sigh, he closed his eyes.
