For the five words contest, June 2007

His peripheral vision took on a blue tint and seemed to waver at the edges as the energy field wobbled slightly. The sweat stood cold on his forehead as he struggled momentarily and sought about him for the disturbance, questioning each of the hundred tiny life forms he knew were the sole occupants of the old building.
There was a sizzle and a sour scent before the dead, dusty body fell with a heavy whisper of wings to the floor; only a moth bumbling for the light given off by his workings.
The wizard wiped his brow and placed his finger tips again against the surface of the strange, water-like metal disc. He felt his nails dip into the solid surface, finding another side to the sheet, in another land. In that grim and grimy house a wisp of fresh air crept over his knuckles and brushed against his cheek, drying the sweat it found there. He was through.
