For the five words contest, March 2011

She wrapped her hands around the struggling wings of the tiny owl, trying to calm him as his feet clawed for purchase in her hands. An eye pivoted towards her and blinked; bewildered, as she gently freed one hand and hastily drew the bowl towards them. A drop; and dark stained the water as it fell from wings torn in the most recent of the violent, climatic magics. Biting her lip, she pulled a silken thread loose from its skein with a tug, and tried one-handed to thread the needle that would hopefully hold the life in the little, broken creature. Sweat matted feathers against her fingers, and she turned with threaded needle only to realise that claws hung limply now, and the eye had dulled. Yet another was lost.
