Prey and Plan

"Kauna!!" Nimeesha cried, bursting through the door with the boy unconcious in her arms. It actually sounded more like "Mmfma!" because she was holding the tiny bird carving in her mouth as she spoke. Kauna looked up at her, eyes wide.

"Oh no, you didn't... You got seen, didn't you!?" The older woman said, standing up. "Very well, go set him in your room. I'll put on some tea, and we'll figure this out," She pointed to Nim's room, and the teenager ran off with her prey. She set him gingerly on the bed, and then gently let the carving drop out of her mouth onto her hand. She set it on the little side table beside the bed."Oh shit..." She whispered, glancing at the boy one more time before walking back into the kitchen.

"Sit, sit..." Nim nodded meekly, sinking to the wooden chair in front of her. "How long have we got, Nimu?" Kauna brought a pot of tea and two cups to the table, and seated herself across from her apprentice.

"About an hour. Maybe two, before he wakes up. Then his memory should start returning within a week. It'll be fully back a few days after that," Nim took a cup and filled it with the steaming liquid. "It was the best I could do without a liscense..."

"Sweet feather spirit that you are, you've put me in a pickle," Kauna said. "You've cast one too many hexes on him. If I put another on him, it'll completely wipe ALL of his memories, because hexes pile on top of eachother. And because of your skills, I certainly can't cancle what you've done. Well, if I had a month or two I could cook something up... But I don't." The woman sighed, then slowly sipped her tea. Nim's golden eyes searched her face, trying to figure out just how much trouble she was in. But Kauna kept her emotions guarded at this moment, so Nim was in the dark. She swallowed hard, and then began to speak softly.

"So... So what am I supposed to do?" Her voice was tentative. "How do I fix this?" No one spoke then, and both the girls found themselves lost in thought.

"Follow him, Nimu," Kauna finally said, after the long silence. "You have to befriend him... And when his memory starts returning, ensure that he stays quiet long enough tha your entire hex wears off... And then, I'll clear his memory of that day, all his memories of you, and all will be well," She drank the last bit of her tea, and then poured another cup.

"Isn't that risky? I'll be seen even MORE if I try to follow him!" Nim cried. "It's been proven I'm not that good at hiding! I mean, if I was good at it, we wouldn't be in this situation!!" Her voice kept rising higher. Once this was fixed, she could very well be exicuted. Her first slip up was unforgivable, but she managed to come through with her head still on her shoulders. But, she wouldn't be so lucky a second time around...

"Nimu!! Calm down!" Kauna ordered. "You will be seen, that is the point! You will go and live the life of a normal teenager! That way, even though they see you, they won't think anything of it... As long as you only befreind the boy, others will not even notice when you have to leave. Then I'll just wipe his memory, and we'll be done."

"You... You aren't going to tell the council?" Nim asked softly, her eyes wide.

"No, I am not going to tell the council." Kauna smiled softly. "No sense getting in trouble for something you can fix," She hugged Nim lovingly.

"Does this make me a criminal?"

"No, dear. Now go put on some normal clothes,"
