He sat, staring with fondness into the last rays of moonlight as they slipped over the shadowed horizon.
Nothing stirred, not even the barest of breezes, a breathless audience for the final performance of the night. The silverwhite orb burst forth rays of invisible light that, nonetheless, clearly outlined the world in a tender glow. Each moment that passed slid by on those pale streams of hope, streams that weaved and danced through the silent audience, captivating every rock, tree, and creature. They wafted through the air and cast invisible shadows in a world where only shadows existed. Somehow, time stood still for all except the wondrous moon that, just like a miracle, was so unexpectedly there despite how obvious it should have been. As the performance ebbed by, the dancer grew more tired and the less life there seemed to be in the world.
There, in that world he sat and watched as the moon finally slipped away and a starless night took over.
