When we arrived, Oakami, Zorah, Nikita, and Rikku weren’t there. Shadow and Kalkan were though. They sat talking beneath a great oak tree. The boys had bonded pretty well together to become close support, you know, for males and all. Spirit also sat alone off to the side. That was odd for me to see, she was never really alone.
Topaz wandered over and played with the boys, so I had decided to find out what was up with Spirit. She was sitting Indian style under a smaller tree in a set of tall dark green grasses with her hands in her lap and her head tilted down. I walked over and sat near her side. I layed a hand on her shoulder and she didn’t even look up.
“What is wrong Spirit?” I asked. “I don’t know…..” she said, eyes still to the ground. “Why? What’s the matter? Are you ok? I said, my voice stained with worry. I had never seen her in this state before. “I…I’m not sure. It feels like something…I can sense it coming…..” she said in a whisper. More concern hitched to me.  What did she mean? “What is this ‘it’?” I asked. “Something is near us, but this is all I know. I can only sense it and not what this may be.” she said. What was coming? Was there really something?
“Should I warn the others of it then?” I asked her. “No,” she said sternly, “ not until I know what it is.” “Ok, I’ll keep the secret for now.” “Thank you.” she said, and then tilted her head up for the first time since we started to talk. Tears slowly fell from her beautiful light blue eyes and were taken by the grounds so dry underneath her.
I hugged her tight for support and to make her feel a bit better. Then I rose from the ground, shifted quickly and ran to find all the others who had scattered.
Something was coming, and only she could sense it. Or was it that the others did too and said nothing out of fear? All I knew for sure was that Spirit never acted that way; in fact, she was almost the alpha female of our group. She was tough and strong, so you humans and breeds out there can imagine how it would make you feel to see the toughest of your friends cry. It makes you only fear it more.
Off I was to find the others wherever they had left too. I search awhile and did not find a trace of them nor any tracks to give me clue to it. I searched a bit more still, just hoping to not be alone anymore for the day. They weren’t near the river, nor near the valley. They weren’t in the clearing and since I couldn’t smell blood anywhere around, so I knew they hadn’t gone and hunted.
I gave up some time later and decided they would return to the den when they wanted to or ready to. I didn’t have to worry about it really. They were always fine when I could not find them. I would just give them time and they would return soon enough. I was just going to go back to our den and await them there. So I turned around and sprinted off with a kick back the way I came.
