How can it be?

I can still feel
your heartbeat pounding
against my cheek,
rough cotton sheets
singing their scratchy
good nights.

The hum of the
frogs
and
crickets
are nature's lullaby.

"Go to sleep.
All is well in this
wide,
wide
world."

How could we be so foolish?

Just look around!
People,
more comfortable holding guns
than sticking up for the peace
that will not come unless protected,
fostered,
sheltered from the fierceness of circumstances
by the few warm hearts.
Jeers before smiles,
conflict before community.

What is right in this world?
This wide, wide world
that is not so very wide at all.

But you were foolish
and I was foolish
and we became more foolish together.

The sun slept on and the crickets,
oh the crickets,
their serenade made us believe.

But that letter came,
and you grow so pale, ghastly,
grim.

What is wrong?

I must go.

Why? Why?

To make sure all is well in this
wide,
wide
world.

Nothing is right in this world,
not so bright,
not so wide,
not so safe.

So why don't you sleep?
The world will be here
tomorrow.
Rest.
