Just checking to see whether this forum is used very much? It'd be great to get all the regular contest participants in here ^^

I think the few members of the Private Contests Forum haven't moved on to this one yet.

Okay, well in ''to kill a mockingbird'' we could describe a horrible character, like a revolting character, as if your sitting there watching them. Sorry, but I did like a description of a women (who actually is real in my life) and I'd like to put it in a competition :D

Why don't you start that contest (the only problem is that you wouldn't be able to enter your own)?

I think I would haev liked that book better if I hadn't been forced to analyze the crap out of it in class myself. I have to say though that To Kill a Mockingbird was about the best of terrible ancient literature we were forced to ebndure in English. Why can't we ever read amything published within the past fifty or sixty years or so?

1945 was about 60 years ago :P

I thought it was an okay book and a much easier read than say The Odyssey and Macbeth >.> Catcher in the Rye is better (so far..) Still, To Kill a Mockingbird is a fine book to do the contest on so go ahead. You can post it in the Contest Section and it can be posted on the Mainpage calendar ;)

because they aren't classics and aren't well known. If they teach more recent stuff, then eventually that stuff will become as old as "To Kill a Mockingbird," and other books of the same status.

In our school (I'm a sophmore right now) We have read "The Oddessy" (sort of (more later on)), "To Kill A Mockingbird," "Something Wicked This Way Comes," "Romeo and Juliet," and "The Tragedy of Julius Ceasar." I have enjoyed them all. Unfortunately, I am the only one heheheheh. I finished "Something Wicked This Way Comes," three months berfore everyone else. :P

With the oddessy, we had fallen behind immensely beforehand, so our teacher split us into groups, and each read a different section, then made a presentation for the rest of the class. So I am still not sure of the story... even thoguh I have seen the episode "Wishbone" had done, many a time.

There are plenty of well known books that aren't "classics" Why not read "A Time to Kill" in exploring race relations in English class instead? It's topical, recent, and has a gazillion dollar grossing movie based on it. There are newer, more interesting books that students could be reading in English. They just aren't. That's why most adults don't read for fun. They get burnt out on it by all the crap they have to struggle through in Highschool and College (University).

I'm not saying not to read classics. There are some good one's out there. However, I do think modern/pop literature should be covered too. I hardly think you have to be 20 years dead for your work to be recognized as quality literature.
