Book name : His Dark Materials
        - Book 1: The Golden Compass (UK: The Northern Lights)
        - Book 2: The Subtle Knife
        - Book 3: The Amber Spyglass
Genre : Fantasy
Author : Philip Pullman

This trilogy is the story of Lyra and her daemon Pantalimon. Lyra is a young girl growing up in an alternate universe to our own in Jordan College, an ancient hall of learning populated by Scholars and Servants. She runs wild through the streets of Oxford until her best friend is kidnapped by the mysterious Gobblers. Lyra determines to rescue him, and together with Pantalimon she travels to the North Pole and beyond, meeting Armoured Bears, Texan aeronauts, and Witches.

Not simply pure fantasy, this trilogy also draws heavily upon Christian mythology and beliefs. It plays with the theory of original sin and consciousness. However, it still manages to remain one of the best fantasy series I have ever read. The characters are well-developed and continue to grow throughout the series, and the story is fascinating and well-written.

This is one of those series' that you just can't seem to put down until you're done. Definitely a must-read.

Note: All three books were made into books on tape (or CD) and the reading is amazing. If you can try to find that as well.

Enjoy! [RiddleRose]
