The Wife


   I hear it. I want it to go away. 'GO AWAY!' I run. I don’t know where, but I run. It’s after me. It’s after me. I know that my breath is making noise along with my foot falls, but I can’t stop running. I turn a corner and lean against the wall. I listen. I try to slow and soften my breathing. A small gasp escapes my lips. 'IT’S COMING!' I start running again and I hear it. The most horrible thing ever.

   “You can run….” It whispers like it’s next to my ear. “But you can’t hide!”

   Something pulled on my arm. I turn screaming no, but my voice was taken with the wind. It’s there. Holding on to me and baring his teeth. His sword is unsheathed and shining against my neck.

   “Let me go. Please let me go!” I feel tears falling down my face. I look down at the sword and see my tears…They’re the wrong color. They’re red. No, they’re blood! It starts laughing. His red and yellow eyes are burning me and I shut my eyes in reaction. I kick him with a sudden burst of energy to keep my life. I take off again.

   “Come back here you wench!” I hear him scream.

   I don’t look back. In front of me looms a large mansion. For some reason I feel that if I go in there I’ll be safe, so many places for me to hide. I race up the steps and fling open the door. I don’t take chances and take off up more stairs that had blood red carpet and lead up to the second floor. My mind tells me that there would be so many open rooms on the first floor. I reach the middle of the stairs when I realize that I’m making little splashes as I stepped. I look down at my feet and I scream again when I see that the carpet turned into blood and that it was a river…a river of crimson life. I look away with tears in my eyes. I had to get away. I had to!

   I get to the top and fly into a random room. It looked safe enough. I hide in a closet. The closet was enormous and filled to the brim with elegant Victorian dresses. 'Perfect.' I crawl into the dresses somewhere near the back. There was enough room for me to move around without moving the dresses. 'How long could I stay here? Will I be found?'

   I hear him! He’s coming.

   “This is the last time you run away!” He yells. “Do I not give you enough!? Do I not dress you in the best!?” He’s angry, but I can’t go to him. I can’t.

   In a flash dresses are flung away and I’m revealed to him. “So here you are. Come. I’ll give you you’re punishment later.” The voice was almost soft. I wasn’t falling for it.

   Tears are coming out of my eyes again. “No.” I whisper in a growl.

   “You will COME!” He pulls me to my feet.

   “NO!” He slaps me.

   “I can always find another. Fine, die!” He pulls his sword out.

   “NO!” I scream one last time as my breath is taken away from me.

   “You should have known better. Why do I keep bothering with you humans?” He walks down the bloody stairs. “Katrina! Why didn’t you get her?”

   “Didn’t want to get my hands dirty? Plus, I didn’t like her.”

   “Go clean her up. She’ll be waking soon. She’s one of us now. Now go!” Katrina took up the stairs. “Just another wife.” He says to his self. “I’ll have ten soon.” He takes out a pocket knife and plays with it as he hears Katrina yelling at the new wife for getting blood on her dresses. Today was a good day for him.
