Welcome To The Unlazy Poets' Contest

This wiki is all about formatted poetry. We aren't all haters of free verse, but seeing as that's everywhere, I thought it would be nice to have one place dedicated to poetic format.
I hope to hold monthly contests here, with a different format specified each month.

124) Who's the best lay? ^^ (Administrator: [Mister Saint])

Number of voters: 2
* a) 1. [Annie] - 415.Miscellaneous.Unlazy Poets.Lay
Number of votes: 0 (0%)

* b) 2. [Eleanor] - 668.Contest entries.Unlazy Poets.May 2008 - Lay
Number of votes: 2 (100%) Voters: [iippo], [RiddleRose]

Competition Rules
1. No plagiarism, of course. That is bad. BAD!
2. One entry per person.
3. The entry must follow the monthly specs or be removed by the judges.
4. Please read Unlazy Poets - Appropriateness and do not submit something too pornographic or graphically violent for teenagers. If the judges believe it is inappropriate, they reserve the right to remove it.
5. Yes, placeholding is allowed, as long as your entry is on the wiki page by the last day of the month.
6. To enter, place your name on the list, and a link to either a separate wiki page or writings page.
6b. To eliminate confusion, make your entry the only piece on that particular page.
7. I need at least 5 accepted entries by the end of the month in order to close the contest for that month. Otherwise, it will carry on into the next month. Which is why it's a good idea to enter a few days before the last day of the month.
8. Contests will be judged by poll. (The judges are only here to make sure a poem follows the format specifications.) And no voting for your own entry.
9. This one's a guideline: it would be really nice if you spread the word about this contest so it could get more active and you'd have someone to compete with.
10. I really hope I didn't forget any rules.

And some advice: Don't worry if your piece gets rejected. It's not the only one! Don't be afraid to try again.

February's Contest: Imitations of Marie de France

So I thought it would be fun to try imitating the style of another poet, and it may as well be one of the influential no-name women of the dark ages, Marie de France.

The challenge is to write Lais in Marie de France's style. We'll use Lanval as a reference. It's the story of King Arthur's knight Lanval, who is, apparently, so virtuous and hotness that he attracts a faerie queen for a lover. Et cetera.

The Lais

Marie de France's Lanval is written with a few important tenets.

First off, the original is written in old French. Translations are not going to do it justice, but good ones keep the stylistic qualities in mind. ^^ Keep that in mind if you read a translation!

The Lay is written:

1. In Iambic TETRAmeter. (my bad). da DUN, da DUN, da DUN, da DUN. For our purposes, you can deviate from it slightly now and again.

2. Primarily in Stanzas of ten lines: eight lines of regular rhyme (ABAB OR AABB for every four lines) followed by a heroic couplet (Two lines, rhyme AA). HOWEVER sometimes the heroic couplet is left out, and the rhyme is approximate.

3. Lays are usually about love and honor and knightly stuff, and tell a story.

For our purposes, short is fine. Lanval is quite long, but we don't have the time for writing things of that length.

Ki Deus ad doné escïence
E de parler bon' eloquence
Ne s'en deit taisir ne celer,
Ainz se deit volunters mustrer.
Quant uns granz biens est mult oïz,
Dunc a primes est il fluriz,
E quant loëz est de plusurs,
Dunc ad espandues ses flurs.

English Example of iambic tetrameter

A frog, who ate a giant fly
a baker put into a pie,
went running for the nearest pond
because he could not find the john

Judges (we need more!)

[Mister Saint]! Whee! I found a volunteer!
Often: [Kiddalee]
More Judges at: Unlazy Poets Judges
NOTE that the judges aren't really judging which poems will win the contests, but only whether or not the poem actually follows the format. Contests will be judged by poll!
If you'd like to become a judge, read Unlazy Poets: How To Judge. This new page has brought major changes to the way the judging will be run on this page.

2007-04-28 [bloody kisses]: are yall still running? (im still kinda new at this)

2007-04-28 [Calann]: Yes, it's still running, the limerick round ends when April ends. :P

2007-04-30 [RiddleRose]: one mooorre daayyy... ONE MORE DAYYYY!!!

ps. calann, you are super-cool

2007-04-30 [Calann]: Hihi, thanks. :3
Here are the winner and host badges, hope you like 'em: <URL:stuff/z/135/lamigraphs/i1177935574_2.jpg> <URL:stuff/z/135/lamigraphs/i1177935574_1.jpg>

And I hope my poem's okay. <_<

2007-05-01 [Eleanor]: In spite of her unfortunate last name, Adelaide Crapsy’s cinquain is exquisite.

2007-05-01 [Jenna Rose]: I just read a Cinquain the other day on DeviantArt. It's a lovely style. The girl who write the poem said that she thought it wasn't a real poem style, or that the teacher taught her to spell it wrong, but I informed her it was real and spelled right. Firefox just says it isn't.

2007-05-01 [Annie]: Haha...poor Adelaide. ;)

2007-05-01 [Laika]: Hokay..I'm probably going to need help with the syllable-thingies again. :D (One theme would be fun too, though I do not know the name in other languages than in Finnish.. It's the format used in Finnish...uh..epic..thingy..(god I suck! T___T) Kalevala and in Hiawatha's song, too. A real female-dog to write but very nice to read.)

..note to self: never EVER make comments after midnight.

2007-05-02 [RiddleRose]: thanks for putting up the poll [Annie]!

congrats everyone! and thus ends my reign over unlazy poets! ^_^

2007-05-02 [RiddleRose]: those are lovely [Calann]

2007-05-02 [Annie]: oh...haha, I thought I was supposed to put up the poll. Were you supposed to do it?

2007-05-02 [Calann]: Someone may want to plop the badges on a sub-page so they won't be buried and forgotten.

2007-05-04 [RiddleRose]: well technically yes, but you know. not that important really.

i stuck the badges at the bottom of the page...

2007-05-06 [Eleanor]: I’ve been revamping my writings folder and as a result I’ve had to rename all my pages. My April limerick is now at 668.Contest entries.2007 April Limerick. I hope this doesn’t cause any problems.

2007-05-06 [Annie]: Aw...sorry riddlerose. I guess I was confused. If you want, you can put the poll up for the end of this month! I mean, I don't know how much you wanted to put up a poll.

2007-05-07 [RiddleRose]: YOU KILLED MY ONLY WISH IN LIFE!!!! HOW COULD YOU!!! -tear tear-

heehee... it's no big deal, seriously! if i get there before you, i'll put it up. ;) sound good?

2007-05-07 [Annie]: haha, ok, sounds good to me. :)

2007-05-07 [Eleanor]: So, not to rush anyone, er, not that I’m anxious or anything, but do we get a winner announcement any time soon?

2007-05-07 [Annie]: Wow wow did the administrator of the poll change to you eleanor?

2007-05-07 [Kiddalee]: The winner announcement takes place at the current judge's discretion, after ey decides that people have had enough chances to vote. Mid-month hasn't been uncommon here, though it seems like most of our voters vote pretty quickly.

2007-05-07 [Eleanor]: Sorry about that Annie, I just updated the site of my submission because I had to change its name. I'm not the administrator, really, I'm not!

2007-05-07 [Annie]: I don't think it's fair to end the voting yet considering two of the contestants (Calann and Mister Saint) haven't voted yet as far as I can tell.

2007-05-07 [Annie]: Also, Eleanor, now that you're the administrator of the poll..I think you set it up so that only you can edit it, so now you're going to either have to fix that so that other people can edit it (i.e. me or riddlerose or another administrator) or you're going to be the one who ends the poll when it's time.

2007-05-07 [Eleanor]: Okay, I have fixed it so anyone can change the poll. I am no longer responsible. Whew!

2007-05-07 [Annie]: Haha, ;)

2007-05-08 [RiddleRose]: mister saint has now voted... dun dun dun... and calann? MIA!

2007-05-08 [Annie]: :) I'm sure she'll vote soon.

2007-05-08 [Calann]: So very sorry, being eaten by uni entrance exam books. <_<

2007-05-08 [Calann]: There we go. *has voted*

2007-05-11 [Sabrina Catherine]: Hey all, I have a poll up for my poems about my love for mi novio. I can't decide which version is better and I would really appreciate the help....

2007-05-18 [RiddleRose]: bumpity bump bump bump... ^_^

2007-05-21 [Sabrina Catherine]: que?

2007-05-24 [Kiddalee]: I've had a cinquain almost written for weeks, but I can't decide what to put in the first line. :-/ I could write another one. Or I could just quit being anal and use the best first line I've found.

2007-05-24 [Eleanor]: So, is the limerick contest decided yet?

2007-05-25 [Annie]: Mmm....good question. ;)

2007-05-26 [RiddleRose]: that would be this month's judge's question to answer. [Annie]? if you want my input though... everyone has voted... so make it over!

2007-05-26 [Annie]: Ok, I was waiting for you to say that. :)

2007-05-26 [RiddleRose]: teehee. and thus she spoke! and there was much rejoicing. congrats [Eleanor]! and everyone!

2007-05-26 [Eleanor]: Thanks so much. I really enjoyed this contest. Congratulations to everyone else as well. There were some wicked limericks submitted.

2007-05-26 [Mister Saint]: Good job, peopleses and porpoises. And, uh, otherwise. ^^ Congrats Eleanor!

2007-05-27 [Eleanor]: * waves her bouquet of roses and curtsies *

2007-05-31 [Calann]: Yay for last-minute entries. xP
*goes back to her exam books*

2007-06-01 [Petals of the Reincarnate]: Uhm..sorry to be a royal pain- I have an enrty *looks shifty* But I am not sure how to do it. I have not used the features on here in a long while.. Oops, I've just read the 'message me' part..*Rolls eyes*

2007-06-01 [RiddleRose]: upload it to a writing document, and then link it to the page. there's a mini tutorial in the pseudo html page, but if you have any more questions post, and i'm sure someone who's not lazy like me can refresh your memory... XD

2007-06-01 [Kiddalee]: Sorry I missed the deadline. :-\ Hey... wait a sec... no poll yet? *sneaks in*

2007-06-01 [Eleanor]: All the entries are so good, I wish I could vote for more than one.

2007-06-01 [Mister Saint]: Who's working for June's judging?

2007-06-01 [Kiddalee]: I'm doing couplets.

2007-06-01 [RiddleRose]: whee! good luck everyone!

2007-06-02 [Jenna Rose]: Thinking the same thing as you [Eleanor] ><

2007-06-02 [Kiddalee]: Ooh... >.< I've got it narrowed down to two...

2007-06-09 [Petals of the Reincarnate]: Woo! No votes for me, I see ^^ I must really sucketh (Either that, or I don't have any friends here on Writersco..) hmm that's a toughie ;)

2007-06-09 [Eleanor]: I wouldn't say that, they were all such good entries, it was really hard to narrow it down to just one. Really hard.

2007-06-09 [Kiddalee]: I second that. *still hasn't decided*

2007-06-09 [Calann]: Friend-votes shouldn't be cast either way. :P

2007-06-10 [mousepoet]: Friend votes should be shot. >.>

Or banished or something. :)

2007-06-21 [Kiddalee]: I wonder if that tie will ever be broken.

2007-06-21 [Mister Saint]: Maybe a tie-breaker poll is in order? Just those two as choices?

2007-06-22 [Annie]: There, I voted. Don't know if it's ok for me to vote since I'm the poll creator, let me know if it's not.

2007-06-23 [RiddleRose]: should be fine!

2007-07-01 [Kiddalee]: Sorry about that guys. I meant "no less than 5 couplets," not lines.

2007-07-01 [Calann]: I am tempted to enter with an old poem. Of course, it fills the requirements - at least I think so - but hmm...

2007-07-01 [Annie]: All fixed up, just barely in time.

2007-07-02 [Kiddalee]: Calann: I personally don't mind, as long as it meets the requirements.

2007-07-03 [Calann]: I just realised that 'message me, Kiddalee' rhymes. Heh.
Well, anyway, since I'm having a nice little block, I'll stick up the old one and hope it's acceptable. :P

2007-07-03 [Sabrina Catherine]: is a july theme gonna be coming out soon?

2007-07-03 [Kiddalee]: An August theme will come out if we get enough entrants for July.

2007-07-03 [Mister Saint]: I'm gonna try this too, I think! Rhyming couplets... *ponder*

2007-07-04 [Kiddalee]: Well, I think a month and four days is enough time to have had a poll...

2007-07-04 [Annie]: lol...ok, i'll close it.

2007-07-04 [mousepoet]: Gah! I just wrote one. Could I sneak it in?

2007-07-10 [Kiddalee]: Does anybody want to judge for August? Message me.

2007-07-22 [Kiddalee]: Everybody vote FAST!

2007-07-26 [Kiddalee]: Folks who don't want to do concrete poetry, do you lack artistic equipment and skills, or do you just think concrete poetry is a bad idea?

2007-07-27 [RiddleRose]: lacking equipment and skillz... XP

2007-07-27 [Laika]: I lack skillz. :D But I have equipment and am easily amused. World, beware!

2007-07-27 [Kiddalee]: Alright, you were supposed to also vote for the second last choice. I'll think of some other format to do.

2007-07-28 [Laika]: So I can't enter bad art if I want to? :D And concrete poetry is a GREAT idea!

2007-07-28 [Kiddalee]: Well, the thing is, I ~really~ don't want to exclude anybody. It would have been different if they had the equipment, but just didn't feel like doing concrete poetry. After all, people miss entering contests all the time. But this would really feel unfair. If anybody wants to start a separate concrete poetry contest some day, you can.

2007-07-29 [Laika]: Somehow I'm now getting the idea that we're talking about different kinds of concrete..I just visioned a poem written in huge letters made out of concrete (the stuff used to build houses with). :D I liked it.

2007-07-29 [Kiddalee]: lol

2007-08-01 [Laika]: Syllables in English. T___T I'd rather make a poem out of concrete. :D But it'll be good practice for me, I suppose. (can you formulate it like that? o.- since "good practice" is an idiom, right? I dunno! D:)

2007-08-02 [Annie]: Haha, you can write it like that Laika...I had no idea "good practice" was an idiom! I never thought about it before...but now that I do, it makes sense!

2007-08-19 [Eleanor]: Sorry I haven’t been around much lately. It’s been a crazy summer. Here’s my entry.

2007-08-20 [Kiddalee]: Whoo! First Entry!

2007-08-25 [mousepoet]: [Sabrina Catherine], your link leads to an empty page. Just so ya know.

2007-08-25 [mousepoet]: Fixed it.

2007-08-29 [Kiddalee]: Great job so far, everybody!

2007-08-30 [Sabrina Catherine]: it did? hmmmm... it works for me.... oh ok XD

2007-09-03 [Kiddalee]: Eep! Sorry I'm late!

2007-09-04 [Calann]: Oh, damn. I forgot. Oh well, I'll have to try an ethere on my own then. :P

2007-09-04 [Sabrina Catherine]: Mine really sucks XD oh well, I did right it in like two minutes so it kinda has to suck ^^ I was just bored during study hall

2007-09-06 [Kiddalee]: Awwww. *huggles [Sabrina Catherine]* Don't be so hard on yourself.

2007-09-06 [Kiddalee]: Alright, I've got my vote narrowed down to... three... choices. Arg. I'm going to have to come back tomorrow.

2007-09-06 [Sabrina Catherine]: lol, thanks.... I never really like my poems..... but I did get second place in for the love of love....

2007-09-15 [Kiddalee]: YaY for entries!

2007-10-01 [Kiddalee]: *wants more entries*

2007-10-08 [Kiddalee]: Oh. I already said it.
Come on, everybody! We need entries!

2007-10-09 [mousepoet]: Oh dear, mine's quite awful. But I couldn't resist being contrary to [Sabrina Catherine]. :)

2007-10-09 [Laika]: There, entered one as well.

2007-10-09 [Sabrina Catherine]: eh? I don't quite understand..... O.o

2007-10-09 [mousepoet]: Love-hate. :)

2007-10-10 [Kiddalee]: Whee!

2007-10-10 [Kiddalee]: By the way, if anybody would like to pick a theme for next month, I'm taking messages.

2007-10-10 [Sabrina Catherine]: ooooohhh, gotcha XD

2007-10-11 [Mister Saint]: There. Five! ^^

2007-10-11 [Kiddalee]: Awesomeness! :D

2007-11-08 [Kiddalee]: I'm sorry I disappeared, everybody. :'(

2007-12-02 [Kiddalee]: Alright. NaNo's over. Somebody enter, please.

2007-12-02 [RiddleRose]: haha... true that. and since i'm already missing it, i shall attempt this one. it's a neat form! i've never seen it before.

2007-12-02 [Kiddalee]: I should attempt it too, since I said I would...

2007-12-02 [RiddleRose]: there you go!

2007-12-12 [Kiddalee]: But I don't get to enter :'(

2007-12-12 [RiddleRose]: TT.TT

2007-12-14 [Sabrina Catherine]: this one was quite challenging

2007-12-15 [Kiddalee]: I'd better get onto it, myself.

2007-12-15 [Kiddalee]: Does anybody want to judge the next available month?

2007-12-16 [Mister Saint]: I'll judge it, Kidda. ^^

2007-12-20 [Eleanor]: Hey, I just got back from being away for a week, and find I've won a contest. Cool! Thanks!

2007-12-23 [Kiddalee]: Woo. Mail me, [Mister Saint]. Okay, now everybody had better fill up the queue so that [Mister Saint] can have his turn to judge! :P

2007-12-28 [Kiddalee]: Eh? Sorry, I haven't been here in a bit. You've changed your poem? I'll look.

2007-12-30 [Laika]: I hope mine's okay. :D The rhythmic stuff is so confusing!

2007-12-30 [RiddleRose]: i really like this one... it's challenging, but it sounds really nice when you read it. cheers!

2008-01-02 [Kiddalee]: Happy Birthday, [RiddleRose]

2008-01-05 [RiddleRose]: thank you!!

2008-01-08 [Eleanor]: RiddleRose, you had a birthday? Congrats!

2008-01-09 [RiddleRose]: 17! yay! 16 is such an awkward age! thank you!

2008-01-09 [Sabrina Catherine]: mine was 15...

2008-01-09 [Annie]: Your awkward age or you just had a birthday?

2008-01-09 [Sabrina Catherine]: .... 15 was my akward age *is now 18*

2008-01-10 [Eleanor]: Awkward ages, eh? I think I better stay out of this discussion.

2008-01-10 [Laika]: It's still awkward when you're almost 26.. The things that make it awkward change, though.

2008-01-10 [Annie]: I agree. I think every age is awkward, you just never escape it.

2008-01-12 [Kiddalee]: I want your entries!!!

2008-01-12 [Calann]: Getting one from moi, just as soon as I get an idea... Hopefully during this weekend.

2008-01-13 [RiddleRose]: 16 is awkward because it's not quite young teen, and it's not quite old teen... 17 is better because you're solidly in the older teen area. also, on the off chance that i go to a theater that actually cards for R rated movies... i don't have ot worry about sneaking in any more! not that i've been carded since like... sixth grade anyway... but it's nice to be safe. ;)

2008-01-14 [Sabrina Catherine]: 18's no fun. There's no on in high school that's dateable due to age differences... >.>

2008-01-14 [Annie]: LOL - I remember when I turned 18 and realized that all the guys I used to think were cute couldn't be cute to me anymore because it was illegal. Yes...that was a very strange moment.

2008-01-14 [Calann]: Phew. I hope my attempt is acceptable.

2008-01-14 [Sabrina Catherine]: yeah it is.... thank god there are 16 year olds... though it feels wierd dating guys that are younger than me, after being with 3 that were anywhere between 1-4 years older than me....

2008-01-15 [Kiddalee]: I think (not 100% sure) that in Canada, an adult is allowed to date somebody as young as 16. That way it's not illegal for an 18-year-old to date a 17-year-old. In that case, we may not have laws against 30-year-olds going with 16-year-olds, but at least then we have the social stigma. But while the numerical gap isn't that large between 18 and 17, sometimes your social age is very different, now that you're allowed to live without Mommy and actually experience things; so I don't think it's a good idea for a high-schooler to date a new adult anyways.

2008-01-15 [Calann]: Sort of weird to follow this discussion... I never gave that much thought to 'awkward ages' and whatnot. :o Only such as to note that the meaning of an age difference of, say, ten years is infinitely more significant when the parties are 10 and 20 respectively as opposed to 20 and 30...

2008-01-15 [Sabrina Catherine]: here, 15 year olds cannot date an 18 year old. once you're 18 you can date anyone older, but no gap bigger than 2 years for someone younger... ((alaska law))

2008-01-16 [RiddleRose]: i think that's roughly the same here... (mass) 16 is still jailbait with anyone 18 or older though... but i don't think most people pay a ton of attention to it. i mean, it's not the dating really, it's sex. and how exactly do you determine/enforce that? ;) that's liberal massachusetts for ya... socially? a high school senior can't date a freshman, but other than that it's okay... depending somewhat on the people involved. dunno about college, haven't gotten there yet!

2008-01-16 [Eleanor]: In Canada, it is illegal to have sex with anyone under the age of 12. It is also illegal for anyone over the age of 16 to have sex with anyone between the ages of 12 and 14. It is also against the law for a person in authority (like a coach or teacher) over some under 18 to have sex with him/her. Other than that, it's a matter of consent. The idea of 13-year-olds having sex gives me the creeps.

2008-01-16 [Sabrina Catherine]: *sarcasm* no way, it's actually illegal for under 12 year olds to have sex? O,o

2008-01-16 [Eleanor]: Well, you used the word "dating". What are we talking about? Dinner and a movie or pedophilia?

2008-01-16 [Sabrina Catherine]: lol I was just kidding.... >.<

2008-01-18 [RiddleRose]: the idea of anyone under 16 having sex bothers me a bit... just cause i remember being fifteen pretty clearly, having only left it behind a couple years ago, and no way in HELL was i or any of my friends mature enough in any way to have sex. i mean... i know it happens a lot. but... lzksjvnlja.

2008-01-18 [Calann]: Just out of curiosity, when you talk about having sex, do you include stuff like petting and oral sex in the definition... or only copulation? It bugs me slightly that more often than not, 'sex' seems to be a word used as synonymous with 'coitus'.

2008-01-20 [RiddleRose]: i define sex as oral sex and intercourse. the levels of intimacy seem about the same, so i don't see as there's a HUGE difference. some obviously, but not huge.

2008-01-20 [Annie]: Ok so....anybody excited about the Poetry Dueling Arena coming back to life?

2008-01-20 [Laika]: I think there is sex in my marriage though there is no copulation. :P

I've never really figured out how the dueling arena thingy exactly works. o.O I have a vague idea but that's it.

2008-01-20 [Annie]: Dueling arena is really simple! You just submit a poem into a category and it "duels" against another one - i.e. people vote on which one they like better. The person who wins is becomes something like the reigning champion and competes with new entrants until she/he loses. It's fun. :)

2008-01-21 [Kiddalee]: I find intercourse to be more intimate than oral sex. But yes, I agree with [Calann] that English speakers are inaccurate when using the word "sex" to refer only to intercourse.

2008-01-22 [Laika]: I find it rather disturbing when people claim that intercourse is the most intimate form of sex. Do you mean I'm missing out on intimacy because I don't like phalli? Most likely not, you just haven't thought about it like that..well, most people haven't.

The dueling thingy sounds like fun. Might give it a try some day. ^^

2008-01-22 [Annie]: Well, I was really just trying to change the topic...but it seems I've failed. :S

2008-01-22 [Mister Saint]: This may not be the best place for this discussion, anyway. ^^ Impressionable youths, and all. And old pervs like me. >.>

What do you all think of the triolets? Now that many have been done, of course.

2008-01-23 [Annie]: Haha, I think they're hard! I have to redo mine. >.<

2008-01-23 [Eleanor]: They are difficult. I've tried other forms similar to this one, where you repeat lines. They take a lot of reworking to get just right.

2008-01-23 [Laika]: I found the triolet rather easy. o.O Maybe I just don't know it's bad? :D The rhythm is most likely accent creeps into written words as well as spoken. <.<

2008-01-23 [RiddleRose]: i dunno... i didn't think it was too difficult... but i've had that poem in my head, trying to find a form to escape with, for quite a while...

2008-01-25 [Sabrina Catherine]: I can't wait for the next poem challenge, then I have something to do... *is waiting for the poll so she can vote*

2008-01-26 [Annie]: Ok, I think mine's all better now. Hopefully.

2008-01-28 [Kiddalee]: I found it easier once I got going on it.
Hooray! 5 entries!

2008-01-30 [RiddleRose]: yay!

2008-01-30 [Kiddalee]: If anybody has more, you're lucky I live in a late time zone. Hurryitup.

2008-02-02 [Kiddalee]: *pokes [Mister Saint]*

2008-02-02 [Mister Saint]: *comes out of hibernation*

Hiya kids. I'm going to do some quick research and come back with something. ^^ Been way too busy to think about stuff!

2008-02-02 [Mister Saint]: Okay, kiddies, I have what should be a fun one for you. I was going to go with Ghazals, but I couldn't find any really clear meanings for it, or rather, meanings I could make clear enough. ^^

So, any questions about this style?

2008-02-02 [Calann]: *raises hand* Uhm... so it doesn't matter whether the rhyme is ABAB or AABB? Or?
Also, it's kind of hard to pay attention to the rhythm of words when you don't know any bloody French. Except for the usual, like merde.

2008-02-02 [Eleanor]: I don't want to vote. I'm sorry.

2008-02-02 [Mister Saint]: It's in iambic pentameter. The language doesn't matter in the example, just watch the end rhymes and pay attention to the rhythms. You should know what Iambic Pentameter is, hon, there was a contest on it here not long ago.

Hm. And no, it doesn't matter which rhyme scheme it is of the two, but I should slap an OR in there. Good call!

2008-02-02 [Calann]: Of course I know what iambic pentameter is. Still. By placing that sentence after the excerpt it seemed like you wanted us to pay attention to the rhythm of the words in the excerpt. But maybe I'm just being stupid. ;3

2008-02-02 [Mister Saint]: They rhythm of the words in the excerpt IS iambic pentameter. Do I need to do a scansion on it for you?

2008-02-02 [Calann]: Sigh. Forget it.

2008-02-02 [Mister Saint]: Duly forgotten. ^^ Also, everyone do note that I don't speak or understand French either. It's utterly unnecessary for our purposes here.

2008-02-04 [Kiddalee]: ***suspiciously begins scanning***

2008-02-04 [Mister Saint]: My bad, kids, it's mostly tetrameter, not pentameter. ^^ I fix!

2008-02-04 [Laika]: So..we're supposed to use form, but then again the form isn't that important since it's "for our purposes", and the form itself isn't defined too accurately. Oh, and we're supposed to imitate the style of someone who writes in French.

..hokay. This ought to be interesting. :D

2008-02-04 [Calann]: Hmm, looks like my triolet sucks. :P

2008-02-04 [Annie]: lol, mine too. ;) Triolets are hard, I think.

2008-02-04 [Mister Saint]: Laika, I put 'for our purposes' there to ease the restrictions. Even in the original Lanval was not perfectly regular tetrameter. They're more like guidelines. ^^ I think if you all will just give it a shot, it won't seem so difficult. But, if everyone would prefer, I'll go back and write strict rules instead and provide a modern English example. What do you think?

2008-02-07 [Kiddalee]: I don't mind it like this. It would be a pain in the neck to write a 1500 word octosyllabic heroic epic. However, it is kind of hard for people who don't hear a lot of French to pick up the iambs by reading it. Well, examples of iambic tetrameter are in the triolets...

2008-02-09 [RiddleRose]: come on somebody! break this tie!

2008-02-09 [Calann]: Puuh. Bloody hard that was.

2008-02-11 [RiddleRose]: and now it's tied again... XP

2008-02-11 [Mister Saint]: There we go. ^^ There's an English tetrameter example.

2008-02-26 [Kiddalee]: What an... example... (I'm just teasing)

2008-02-27 [RiddleRose]: aww! thanks folks!

2008-03-13 [Kiddalee]: You're welcome. Hooray!

2008-05-30 [Mister Saint]: Wow, I utterly forgot this was going on still. So... Annie wins by default then?

2008-05-30 [Annie]: Well it's not the end more day isn't there?

2008-05-30 [Eleanor]: Got one in just under the wire.

2008-05-31 [Mister Saint]: Hee... oh, good. I saw "February's Contest" up there, and I just figured everyone gave up!

2008-05-31 [Annie]: Oh ya huh...I thought it was May's :P

2008-06-02 [Kiddalee]: I'm really sorry, guys. Apparently hormone treatments aren't worth it for me. I have had an idea in my head for about 5 months, but you shouldn't wait up if you don't want to.

2008-06-02 [Mister Saint]: Well. The judging rules say at least 5 accepted entrants must be had; for my part I think it's well past time to put up a poll. Is it okay to go ahead and do that?

2008-06-03 [Kiddalee]: Sure it's okay.

2008-06-04 [Mister Saint]: Right-o. Poll's up, monkeys!
