Scams

Avoid these! They include contests that rip you off or aren't even judged, vanity publishers pretending to be prestigious, and literary agents who only pretend to help you. Writer Beware is another great organisation to look to for warnings (www.sfwa.org/beware). Also see About the Ads.

Contests

Delmont-Ross Literary Contest
Poetry.com (International Library of Poetry)
PoetryAmerica.com (League of American Poets)

Literary Agents

Janet Kay and Associates
Johnson-Warren Agency

Unethical Vanity Publishers

American Book Publishing (or C. Lee Nun)
Creative Arts Book Company
Dandelion Books
Oak Tree Press
Press-Tige Publishing
PublishAmerica

Still Need Confirmation

Submit possible scams here, with links to evidence if you have it (the more you give me, the less the staff will have to work to confirm it, so it would be nice if you linked to all proof you have).

[Kiddalee]
Xlibris, a print-on-demand company, has been known to spam Elfwooders (without regard to age) but I don't know if this classifies them as unethical, since I last heard of it years ago, and the rest of their practises are currently fine... Any opinions?

I was asked by a member whether this place is safe or not, so I guess I'll take a look.

2006-04-02 [Paz]: I am ;P I thank you for these notices as well!

2006-04-03 [RiddleRose]: most definitely! most helpful. ^_^

2006-04-04 [Spike]: i hope it works, because i am writing a story

2006-04-04 [Lady of Lore]: amen as well to the poetry.com, my honey actually changed his entry so he's sort of mocking them and they haven't even noticed. I have the link of you'd like to see it, its kinda funny/angry. ^_^

2006-04-04 [Spike]: ok, i just want to write the stories i want to write with out getting in trouble for them

2006-04-05 [Kiddalee]: There is now a contest to see who can write the most horrible poem for poetry.com and get away with it. If I could just find the place...

2006-04-05 [dayahnaira]: what would happen if you went of the line limit of poetry.com? would they not let you put it in or not even notice...yeah I have had people tell me there poem won at poetry .com and I just try to tell them that its all a scam...but usaly they don't listen..sigh

2006-04-06 [Emily]: My sister constantly does that poetry.com stuff. I've no idea why...

2006-04-06 [Kiddalee]: Maybe because it's easy. You don't need to sign up. I guess she doesn't realize the negative consequences of using that place.

2006-08-22 [Mental Patient #31759]: I added another one just like Poetry.com, PoetryAmerica.com, which was probably derived from it. >.< I got sucked in, I admit, but then they said my works were going to be published in the exact same book Poetry.com sells. A little coincidental, no? e.e Anyway.. yeah. Last time I'm doing one of those things again.

By they way, I fixed the spelling of "organization." :P

2006-08-22 [iippo]: How very American of you. Organisation is the correct spelling in British English.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/organisation
Why fix if it isn't broken? :P

2006-08-22 [Dangerous Salome]: English came before American English, so would "organisation" be... More correct?

2006-08-22 [iippo]: Well, American spelling rules are often easier to remember (z instead of c or s) and are usually the way the words are taught when learning English (was in my school). It doesn't really matter online since it's a global community.
But there are also some who might take offense if their way is "fixed", so it's best to check somewhere whether there are two possibilities.

2006-08-23 [Mental Patient #31759]: Erp. >< Sorry. I didn't know.

2006-08-23 [iippo]: Don't worry, it happens. :)

2006-08-23 [Kiddalee]: ***refixes the spelling* Thanks so much for the help! ^_^

2006-08-29 [Emily]: Does anyone want to take a look at allpoetry.com?

2006-08-30 [Kiddalee]: It looks down for now...

2006-11-07 [blak_Roses]: hmm...i think i entered a contest like this once...you know it was a contest for kids ages 4 to 10...well i was the only one in the 10 age group.....and I lost lol !! I think it was rigged!

2006-11-10 [Kiddalee]: Oy. Well, maybe they didn't want anybody to win on a mere technicality (is it a real win if you're the only contestant?). Anyways, did you have to pay to get in?

2006-12-31 [Kiddalee]: Whoever asked about that Common Ties place, sorry I haven't been looking at that lately. I got caught up in school, and completely forgot about it.
